Does anyone know how many mountains the appalachian trail summits? I am trying to organize a charity for disabled veterans through my hike.

Not terribly helpful, but a whole bloody lot! You might try downloading the online Companion, and reading through it. It generally tells you when a peak is summitted (or almost so, when the Trail skirts it). One problem is that some don't have names.....

How do you define what a peak is, as opposed to some of the pimples we have here?

How do they measure prominence, or how much it sticks out above the surroundings?
Katahdin is awesome.

I'm not aware of that data, but I do know that according to the 2008 data, the total elevation climb of hiking the AT is equal to climbing Mt. Everest 17.7 times...
