How to modify a 5 oz. piece of gear to have at least six uses

First, the modifications:

1. Buy a Platypus Quick Disconnect kit and a grommet kit with grommets large enough to fit over the INSIDE male part of the quick disconnect itself (a ½” grommet will work but a 3/8” gives a tighter fit). The part I’m referring to that the grommet has to fit over is the upper left piece of the picture shown in the link below (sorry - couldn't get the picture to insert)

2. CAREFULLY (so as to not tear the bag) put one grommet in the side of the bag (shown in the link below) about 3” ABOVE the bottom of the bag (which side doesn’t matter). You put the grommet here to make sure any debris in the water in the bag can settle to the bottom of the bag.

3. Supper glue the grommet to the bag on the inside and outside and let dry. This provides a “seal” so that no water will leak out and so the grommet will not move around/be “loose and abrade the bag.

4. Insert the afore-mentioned part of the disconnect into the grommet and superglue BOTH the inside and outside side of the quick disconnect fitting to the grommet. Let dry, then add a SECOND coat of superglue for additional adhesion/prevention of tearing at the grommet area.

5. You can now insert the other part of the disconnect fitting the bag fitting to make a gravity water filtration or use it with ordinary “pump” filtration attaching hose to the filtering system you’re using.

NB- you can also use a Platypus “shut-off valve” but it’s more susceptible to being torn off the bag than a Quick Disconnect and requires manually taking off any hose for the gravity filter, again risking tearing the bag.

TOTAL cost of the system not including filtering apparatus: about $35 (not including “adult beverages consumed)

TOTAL WEIGHT of SYSTEM: under 5 oz.

Some uses (your uses may vary :)):

Shower (original intended use)
Clothes/shoe/tent/footprint/dish washing “shower”
Dry sack (with top rolled up) for sleeping bag/clothes/etc.
Hanging food bag (with top rolled up)
Water-carrying bag/reservoir (up to 10 L) for water at camp.
Water filtration system: gravity filter bag and/or standard pump filtration water source (as modified above)

Quick Disconnect kit: 0.32 oz. – about
