Hey all, I'm just looking for a general estimate of mileage and/or time-to-hike for a section of the trail. I know I have seen this elsewhere, but can't seem to find it. I'm interested in the distance (and typical time to hike--considering your pace) from the base of the approach trail to neels Gap. Again, I realize that everyone's pace is different.. about how long did it take you to hike this part? Thanks.

39.5 miles. 3 nights, 4 days.

2 miles per hour works out pretty well for me as an average. ie, after you factor in water filtering/food/bathroom breaks, etc.

2 mph was my guess as well... but I wasn't sure about the distance. thanks.

Geez. I figured it was an easy one, but you snapped a response in less than 5 minutes. Thanks L.Wolf!

From Springer, 2 days and a morning. That was in 02. Now, it would be a day and a morning. Pace is individual. You might find 3 mph appropriate, or it could be 1.5.

I read somewhere to figure on 2MPH for the average hiker, and to add 30 minutes time to your hike for every 1000ft of elevation change. Makes sense in both directions, because you are likely slowing up when going uphill, and taking it easy coming down the other side (and opposed to rolling arse over teakettle to the bottom) :jump

Its a pretty easy hike for 4 days.
Day 1 Amicalola to Springer or Stover Creek (~8-11 miles)
Day 2 Springer/Stover Creek to Gooch, or just short (~10-15 miles)
Day 3 Gooch to Woods Hole or the campsites near Henry Gap (~10-15 miles)
Day 4 Woods Hole/Henry Gap to Neels (~6-9 miles)

For 3 days is doable, as well:
Day 1 Amicalola to Hawk Mountain (~16 miles)
Day 2 Hawk Mountain to Big Cedar (~14 miles)
Day 3 Big Cedar to Neels (~10 miles)

I've done both, and prefer the 4 day itinerary. The mileages are from memory, so check them to be sure, but I think they are close.

It would be easier to start at Neels Gap and hike South because of Blood Mountain near Neels Gap. I estimate 1.75 miles per hour.

It took us 3 days and 2 nights in early April '04:

Night 1: Hickory Flatts Cemetery
Night 2: Summit of Ramrock Mountain (just before Woody Gap)

I hike at about a 2.4 mph pace, but the 3 others in our little group ranged from 1.4 to 2.7 mph. The fastest guy turned his knee on Day 2. The slowest guy would get into camp by 5 PM with more than enough time to make camp. I was typically done by 2 PM, but I was trying to pace myself for the three 18-milers that followed.
