Early 20s female solo hiker looking for a buddy to start the AT off with! Preferably female. I plan on getting a go the first week in April 2010 starting at Springer.

Good luck and happy trails

Thank you for a serious response! LOL. I only wish I knew who these other people were that I now know to stay away from, haha. What a riot.

Hooking up with a guy on the A.T. should be very easy, but as the saying goes, "the odds are good but the goods are odd.

Coastie, finding a suitable hiking partner, whether male or female, is sometimes best decided when you better understand yourself on the trail, how you hike, and the same about prospective partners. This way you can sometimes match up better or find a suitable way to hike with someone else.

If you don't mind be patient for awhile and starting solo one good possible route to finding that hiking buddy is to do just as Lugnut suggested.

The AT is a social trail. You'll meet 100's of possibble partners. It might be better doing it the way Lugnut suggested.

Don't mind the eastcoast hiker rant. They are mainly harmless. I think.

I'm not creepy, just a really sloooow hiker. Probably couldn't keep up with a gal in her 20's. Maybe I'll see you sometime in April, Coastie. I'll be starting April 4th or April 11th, depending on the weather.

dont worry too much about trying to find a hiking partner before you get out there. There will be a ton of folks out there in early April. Some days there are as many as 100 hikers a day leaving from the Springer area. Just be observant and you will find folks that have similar interests, hiking patterns, and that you enjoy hanging around with. By the time you get out of Georgia, you will probably already have a small group of hikers that you are traveling with, whether you start solo or with a hiking partner. Go out and have fun.

See you along the trail.

Coastie - you still haven't defined creepy. Lots of guys need to know if they are okay or not.

From a former Coastie to a potential Coastie be "Semper Paratus" on the trail and you'll be fine.

But you are still being elusive about your qualifications.

Ah, Coast Guard. The name makes sense now. If you can put up with this crew, you'll do fine on the trail. There will be plenty of others (females included) looking to partner with someone, at least for the first stretch. You'll find someone with a compatible hiking style when you get out there. Good luck and enjoy the hike!

Does the Coast Guard still have the 6'4" requirement, so the guys can walk ashore if the boat sinks? :D JK I prefer the saying Semper Fi! :)

Heck, I'd join the CG if they'd let me fish while we were out. Don't think that will ever happen!

Seriously though, best of luck to you though. Hope you nail down OCS and complete the trail too.

I've never been accused of being creepy on my section hikes. Smelling like a hiker on the other hand, I'll take the 5th on that charge.

Have a good hike, and don't worry to much about finding people to hike with. Even on my section hikes I met up with people I ended up hiking with rather quickly. Don't camp near roads, and just keep your wits about you and you'll be fine.

I wouldn't act under the assumption that all the guys you meet on your hike are going to be creepy. Sounds like a pretty crappy way to start a hike and meet people. I think you'd be better off assuming people are nice and kindhearted until they prove otherwise instead of thinking they're all creepers from the start.

I thru-hiked in 09' and I totally agree with Dogwood. Don't worry about starting alone. You will meet so many people that finding a group that you feel comfortable with will be no problem. I ended up hiking with multiple groups for extended periods of time and love them all like family!

I keep hearing "long haired hippy dudes, need not apply".....

The original song was by Five Man Electrical Band. Song title Signs.

And the sign said, "Long-haired freaky people need not apply"
>So I tucked my hair up under my hat, and I went in to ask him why
>He said, "You look like a fine, upstanding young man, I think you'll do"
>So I took off my hat and said, "Imagine that! Ha, me workin' for you!"
