Hi. I have been lurking for a while looking for information and decided to join today. I haven't been hiking very long as an adult, and there sure is a lot to learn! :) Since I live near the Pinhoti Trail, I have been considering trying it out. I've printed out all the journals I can find about it from trailjournals.com.

There is one journal that I haven’t been able to locate yet. I've heard about this detailed trail journal about the Pinhoti Trail written by some wacko named Minnesota smith, but it's not on here or there. Does anyone know how I can find a copy of that journal?

I appreciate all your help in completing my overview of the Pinhoti before I start going out on it for the first time.

Thank you, Bobcat.

His journal was deleted...

What info are you looking for on the Pinhoti? Ive thru'd it and have repeatedly hiked all the AL sections...

A great journal will be up there soon, I have some friends who will be thru-ing in the next couple of weeks!

Minnie's Pinhoti journal has been deleted? The horror! Did it go with the trainwreck on the AT later?

I hiked the Alabama portion of the Pinhoti last year as well. I have a trailjournal here (http://trailjournals.com/entry.cfm?trailname=9739).

I also have the five trip reports here on WB:

March (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=48218&highlight=pinhoti)
June (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=51207&highlight=pinhoti)
October (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=55258&highlight=pinhoti)
November (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=56649&highlight=pinhoti)
December (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=56888&highlight=pinhoti)

I head out next weekend to continue my section hiking in the Georgia sections.

Cuffs is a goldmine for PT knowledge. She's built chunks and maintains some, so it really is her baby. Her advice helped me out quite a bit along the way. But I'll answers any questions you've got as best I can also.

Thank you all for your responses. I had heard that Minnesota smith had a very detailed journal that some friends thought might amuse me. The AT sounds too hard for me to even consider right now, since I am healing from a total knee replacement a few months ago.

As far as the Pinhoti Trail, does anyone know if there are:
1) any hostels along the way?
2) Some folks I have talked to say it's easy and other difficult. What is your opinion?
3) I am a woman in my 50's who hiked with my family when I was younger in Brazil. I would like someone's opinion on what kind of shape I need to be in to hike on the Pinhoti Trail?
4) Is it hard to get water on the Trail?

Thank you!

1) No. Closest thing is the lodge @ Cheaha SP, and its not cheap.
2) Yes it is difficult in sections (rocks and tough climbs).
3) I'd check out Mobill's TJ. Decent shape would be my reccomendation.
4) In summer you'd probably need to carry a day or 2s worth.

I finished my Al. Pinhoti section hike this past weekend. I read some of the shelter journals from Minnesota Smith. I think he may have been writing in two different personalities, in separate entires. Like some guy was always on his heels about to catch him and do something....little weird. Start hiking south from Cave Springs and read all of the shelter journals, they kept me entertained at night. Flem was pretty much right on it with the questions. There are about three or four Al. sections that you will need to carry water, if you plan on camping.
