Everybody seems to say it or hear/read somebody else say it at some point: "hike your own hike".

Anybody have any other candidates (e.g., "hike your own way") or is the cliche here to stay ?

Risking the ire of the forum, I think Hike You Own Hike is misleading. You hike the trails hike. I started out believing I'll get up in the morning, eat breakfast, hike some, stop for lunch, hike til I'm tired, eat, make camp. Ended up with it get dark and there's no place to camp, camping illegally, and running out of food. Had to learn to consult the trail. Trail says I have to climb this mountain today. Trails says I have a choice of 5 miles, 12 miles or 20 miles between camping spots. Trail says you got four days between resupplies. For me the long hike was not about being in charge but learning to let the trail be in charge.

Quick instructions for finding an alternate phrase to HYOH:
[verb] your own [noun].
Ex.: Poke Your Own Eye. etc.

I had a guy tell me to hike my own hike once.
It's a meaningless phrase.
How about "GET OFF MY LAWN!"?

The only time I have ever used "HYOH" in a post:

Most of us use "thru" instead of "through" because if you get rid of the "o," "g," and "h" your pack is lighter. Even if you decide you don't like "thru," I would at least recommend dropping the "g," as they are notoriously heavy. Everything you might use a "g" for (and I'm thinking pounding in tent stakes, or using a bandana over the hole to pre-filter water) can be accomplished with either the "o" or the "h." So it would be a throuh hike, unless you feel you can get by with just one "h." Experienced hikers can, but don't get yourself into trouble over a little bit of weight.

Now of course we're going to get into an argument with those who say that the "g" can do everything the "o" and the "h" can do, and so it would be better to thrug hike, but that sounds so ugly.

UL folks lately have been trug hiking, but they eventually annoy everyone around them by constantly asking to borrow other hikers' "h," and trust me, you don't want to be that kind of hiker.

So basically though, you know -- HYOH, unless you feel you can get by with a HYO attitude.
