so here is my gear list for my thru. I'm flying into atlanta on march 27th and starting the 28th. of course any suggestions and comments are welcome.

Rain gear-Go lite reed pants 5.9oz <-- IMO, you don't need these

8oz alcohol bottle with cap in zip lock bag) 6.8oz <-- if this is just the bottle, you can do better with a small soda pop bottle

Hydration-Aquamira (backup) in small dropper bottles 1.05oz <-- I'd leave the filter and use the Aquamira

First aid-4 bandaids,1 4x4 gauze bandage, small tube of neosporin,
2 anteseptic wipes,2 second skin blister pads,2 sheets of
moleskin,6 tabs anti-diareha med,4 antihistimine tabs,
20 vitamin I tabs in small container, tick tweezers, and
small nail clippers. all in a aloksak bag 2.4oz

I'd leave 1 sheet of moleskin and half the Ibuprofen out. Put 'em in a mail drop for later on. Are you on any medications? I was surprised when my doctor told me that I couldn't take Ibuprofen because of something else I take. Just a thought.

Gear aid-Patch kit for neo-air,3 safety pins, needle, small spool of
thread, 2 zip ties, & 30 ft of kelty trip tease like line, small
tube of super glue. 2.9oz

Don't know about the super glue. Might want to add another needle and pre-thread one of them (great tip I heard here recently). I also carry a couple of small binder clips (aka bulldog clips) as mini-clamps if needed.

Safety- Fox micro wistle worn around neck, storm proof matches,
Lite my fire magnesium stick, EM fire starter 3.6oz
Total 8.9oz

I'd add a few vaseline-soaked cotton balls or some jute twine for tinder. Virtually weightless.

Hygeine-1 oz msr pack soap 1.2oz

Soap is for showers. :)

Extra stuff-Cell phone,charger and extra battery 8.0oz

I only turn my phone on once or twice a day. Battery life goes way up that way.

Have a great hike!

Looks pretty good. Very thorough. Some observations:

will you wear all jackets at the same time? if not, might be too many
camp footwear
bandana/buff (http://www.mountaincrossings.com/atcoriginalbuff.aspx)
pencil and paper/notebook
what is 'A.G.G. insulated pad for neo-air' and what is it for?

Good Luck!

See you on the trail,

Same thing I thought, too many jackets. Very nice other than that. Good luck!

I have'nt figured out how to quote someone else, so here are a couple responses.Yes i agree I need pencil and paper. Add that. As for a buff, I do have a mapdana, i will have to consider that,as i am aware of the many uses of this item.

As for the duplicate jackets. Originaly my intent was to just go with the thermawrap jacket. But around mid feb after spending a very cold nite outside, and coupled with the weather at this time in Georgia, I panicked and got the down parka to further extend my sleeping system and camp comfort. My thought was its better to have 9oz of prevention. As soon as i am convinced this COLD weather has passed, i was going to send it home. It may not make the list depending on the forecast.

The A.G.G. is "antigravity gear" insulated pads. Helps to raise the R-value of the neo-air. Planed on sending it home in may.

camp footwear-trail runners with laces loosend and bread bags if my shoes are wet.

great tip on the pre-threaded needle. I am deff. going to do that. thanks

lose the trowel, send the deet to you later on in a drop or just buy some when the bugs actually kick in. ditto for the bug headnet.

I don't think you need a pack cover and a liner bag (I'd lose the pack cover)... but that's my opinion. I won't be bringing my whistle or a back up light, but again, purely my personal choice there and the ounces gained are so minimal you should just ignore me. :)

I'd also bring just the down jacket and then swap with the other - I can't tell if that was your plan. And I second all of Rocket's suggestions.

Some people like to bring a piece of that netting used to package citrus as a pot scrubber. Super light, makes life easier. I don't know how many cans you plan on opening... could be unnecessary. And I just drink beverages out of my pot. All very nit-picky, personal preference type stuff though!

Inwoods
03-12-2010, 15:20
Hmmm... Leave the sleeping pad behind 5.7oz. swap out jackets a little later 10.0oz. get deet when bugs come out 1.1oz. shorten up first aid kit .5oz. That drops just over a pound. now i have room for wiskey

It may not make the list depending on the forecast.

The A.G.G. is "antigravity gear" insulated pads. Helps to raise the R-value of the neo-air. Planed on sending it home in may.
I wouldn't rely on the forecast to make that decision. When starting in GA how will you know what the weather in the Smokies will be like in a couple of weeks?

If you feel you need an 'extra' jacket, then you are right, what is 9 oz? But the question remains, will you ever wear all three at the same time? In camp, if you are cold, you get in your sleeping bag and if needed put on extra clothes, etc. In Feb when you were cold, were you wearing your thermawrap in the sleeping bag, as well as all your other clothes? On top of all that, would you ever wear the parka also?

I'm just thinking out loud. Bottom line is that it is better to be safe than sorry. When out in the woods and you need something, you have to have it with you...

As far as the AGG (I knew it was antigravity gear) extra pad, it just seems excessive to me, but I don't know since I don't have the neo-air thingy. (For anyone else considering the neo-air, the possibility of having to carry an extra pad is definitetly something to consider prior to purchasing...)

Anyway, Good Luck!

See you on the trail,

Its looks to me like you're well equipped. 30 pounds is light enough.
I would keep everything on your list.

awesome list.

Only thing i would do different is get a lighter weight/smaller camera (you are at 13 ounces) & go for the Tarpent Moment tent. Probably save close to another 3 lbs.

Nice job!!

I agree with some of the comments already posted, for example that you don't need 2 down jackets.

Here's my opinion.

Pack cover and a pack liner (assuming it's a dry bag of some kind) - why do you need both of these? just bring one or the other. Stuff your night time clothes and sleeping bag inside a trash compactor bag and twist up the top, it's waterproof no matter what.

dry sack for sleeping bag - if it's inside your waterproof pack liner, you don't need an extra bag for this.

sleeping pad - it's very heavy. If you're not willing to comprimise on the comfort then that's your decision, but you could save almost half a pound by using a foam pad instead. It's also warmer than an inflatable and you could ditch the extra pad.

gaitors - you may not need these. they can make your feet sweaty

inflatable pillow - neat trick! blow up your Platypus almost all the way, put it inside a shirt, and you have a pillow for 0 extra ounces!

8L dry bag - you have so many bags! you only need one dry sack for night clothes and sleeping bag. (the trash bag mentioned above will fit everything)

wool hat - you don't need this if you have a balaclava!

down booties - these are excessive IMO

mitten shells - why do you need these and the gloves? again just bring one or the other

Gore-Tex parka - this is very heavy. Have you considered a lighter nylon shell, and just wearing the layers you already have underneath? there's no such thing as "breathable" rain gear so don't worry about that ;)

water filter - hate to tell you this after you made your own, but I agree that a filter is overkill for the AT. you should be fine with the AquaMira

soap, trowel, DEET - agree to toss these. are you really gonna wash up when it's 30 out? I wouldn't! bugs won't be bad at first. you can wrap your tape around your water bottle instead

electronics - you have so many! Any way you can cut down on this? The camera especially is very heavy. also, I would ditch the extra batteries. If your headlamp or camera goes out it's not exactly an emergency situation.

hope this helps! your hiking style may be different than mine but you're asking for opinions so there they are!! :sun

It looks good:
Conditions may change, but I'd keep the rain pants and add a pair of warmer long john bottoms until you're sure there's no more waist deep snow. Plowing through deep snow is cold even when the air temp is warm. Add a pair of wool mittens until the snow is gone. Even now, you could probably send some stuff to the beginning of the Smokies. Once you're past the snow (or it melts), send some of the warm stuff home.

For the White Mtns, if you're thinking that far ahead, have rain pants, long johns, hat, mittens and the synthetic jacket; hypothermia is not fun.

Yeah it's starting to warm up down south; I definitely wouldn't bring that many jackets. I was able to hike in short sleeves in Pisgah National Forest last weekend.

I doubt you'll need the down booties by early April with that sleeping bag, just take an extra pair of wool socks for sleeping

Capilene is great base layer, good choice

I also love the Mountain Hardwear Typhoon rain jacket, it's the one I'm taking this year too

I'm using the Deuter ACT Zero 60+10, I love Deuter packs

have a good hike, I'm starting April 6th, will be behind you!

Pillow-Kooka bay inflateable pillow

I've been looking for an inflatable pillow, especially since the Montbell UL inflatable seems to be on back order everywhere. I just ordered the Kooka bay pillow after seeing this post.

Thanks!

Oh, the gear list looks good. Would have to agree with others on the # of jackets. I have a Marmot Precip rain jacket and under that I use a Montbell UL down liner. Used both together in 20 degree weather and was plenty warm!

Have a great hike!

Just curious...does it make sense to have a pack cover AND a pack liner? Shouldn't one or the other suffice to keep out wetness?

You might want to stop at Neels Gap, just after you come off Blood Mtn. It's about 30 miles from Springer, and the AT goes right through the store. The folks there will go through your pack and tell you what you need and what you should send back. You would be surprised.
