So I read with the paperwork that came with my pocket rocket not to use a wind screen b/c it could trap heat in causing canister to explode!! I have seen where people talk of useing a screen w these stoves, i assume there not exploding, are you guys just modifying another stoves screen or building your own?

Cannister stoves burn so efficiently that in nearly every case, wind screens aren't necessary. Most folks don't bother with one.

Using material from a cheap aluminum oven liner, my wife and I cut a 4-5 inch circle. A second circular opening, the diameter of a canister top lip, was cut in the center of that. When cooking, that was placed on top of the canister can, insulating the can from the stove. Secondly, we made a three-sided wind screen that stood up about half the height of our cooking pot. All of this folded up nicely in our cook pot when hiking. This set-up definitely helped save fuel, while preventing the can from overheating.

I know this is hard to visualize, but we will be happy to email a picture later this week if you share your email address in a PM.

When I asked Winton about it at Neel Gap, he told me he'd run if he saw me use a screen with my pocket rocket. That was enough for me.

Any windscreen on a canister stove should not enclose the canister. Snowpeak sells this to go between the canister and the stove:

You can imagine something like this but with tall sides, shielding the flame from wind and shielding the canister from the canister. It'll also need holes in the bottom or side to provide oxygen to the flame.

Do not let the canister get hot!!!! If it's hot to the touch, it's getting too hot.

There are stoves with a remote canister that incorporate windscreens:

Should be enough info to spin your head once or twice.

Or, one picture is worth half a dozen lines of WB post. That's what I was trying to describe.
