My bother and I are going to hike both Ga and NC sections of AT. We're driving up from Fl April 28th and are looking for advice on where to park and how to get back to are car. We were thinking of driving our car to Union Gap and getting a ride back to Springer then hike to Union Gap. Drive our car to Winding Stair and getting a ride back to Union Gap and so forth. Is this a good or bad idea and could you help with ideas or suggestions. Thanks for the help
Duke

...the art of the section hike! the prevailing wisdom is that it is better to hike toward your car, so you can hike at your own pace, without worry about meeting the shuttler at a specific time. some like to reach the car every three days or so for resupply -- or you can plan to resupply every other time at the trail town, then hit your car every 6 or 7 days for resupply... or you can just put your car at the end for that more authentic long distance hiker feel. enjoy your trip.

Lazurus thanks so much for responding. What you're describing is exactly what we're trying to do but, doesn't the shuttler need plenty of notice where and when to pick you up? Duke

Hey Duke,
I moved your thread to the "Trail heads and Shuttles" forum. That's the best area considering your questions.

For hiking thru GA, contact the folks at Hiker Hostel. Use them as a base for your car they can shuttle you to Springer and pick you up at any of the various Gaps.

Yes. I'd call whoever your wanting a shuttle from 2 weeks in advance. They will have done this before and will know the best place to meet up with you. You'll leave your car where you end at and the shuttler will give you a ride to the starting point.

In addition to running shuttle service, the Hiker Hostel will put you up for the night (providing they're not full up with people at this time of the year) and serve up a great breakfast at a very reasonable price. I've used them for years, and they are reliable for the day to day stuff and in the one emergency I had, they came through with flying colors.
