Hey guys im arriving in Roanoke, VA. tomorrow morning at 9am on a Grey Hound bus. I was just looking for some sort of advice into what direction to the trail. Im pretty much terrible at planning and as soon as i get off the bus im just going to start walking somewhere. I'm not going to shuttle or anything but i am planning on hiking north to NY.

Anyway, if you were just getting off a bus at roanoke what would your next move be to getting to a trailhead?

get on hwy. 220 towards Daleville. once you cross under I81 go about 1/3 mile and get on the AT next to Pizza Hut

Loan Wolf, is the Pizza Hut new? Because I remember the trail hits the woods beside a little convenience store/gas station there at Daleville after it crosses Rt. 220.

Have a good hike, Sliced.
Be sure to bring your earmuffs and rain jacket. It's gonna be wet and cool out there...

Pizza Hut was there a year ago...

You could also call the outfitter in Daleville and see if they'd pick you up. I've used them for shuttles 3 times. They're located 1/4 or so mile from the trail.

i'd take d.o.c. up on his offer,or get a hitch to the catawba trailhead, just a few more minutes by car, than the daleville trailhead. the trailhead at catawba is 20(trail) miles south of daleville and you won't miss McAfee knob and tinkers cliff the hike down into daleville is cool too IMO
if you get dropped off at the catawba trail head, & if its late in the afternoon theres 3 different shelters not too far up the trail

D.O.C. how can i hit you up? do you want to message me your phone number or something? Im just going to be pretty much lost for a little bit because i enjoy just straight up winging my hiking trips haha (probably not the best idea). But if i had someone to talk to for like 20minutes and could set me on the right path thatd be awesome.

If not thats good enough, im sure ill figure it out, and i planned to arrive at 9am so i can sleep on the bus and just travel right when i wake up (HOPEFULLY).

let me know if you get that sleep on the bus. I third the motion to start in Catawba.
If nothing else that will give you 20 miles to decide if you need to pick something up when you pass thru town.

I live in Roanoke and work downtown about 2 minutes from the station. However, I am working out of town all this week or I would have been able to have helped you out! When you get off the bus walk down Campbell Avenue to the International Food Court building and go to Zorbas and eat. It is awesome. Definitely start in Catawba as mentioned above. If you it were Thursday, you could eat at The Homeplace which is a mile down from the Trailhead. Enjoy your hike!

You can catch a cab from the airport to either the Catawba or Daleville trailhead.

Exactly. About a 20 minute ride either way.
