With the 2010 census well underway, I thought I'd inquire what hikers and others are doing with regard to it. If you are away for six months hiking, and may not return to where you were living, what do you do with the form as it gets forwarded to you?

It looks like the feds are having a lot of trouble in especially rural parts of the country on getting people counted this year--here are a couple of reports, one from Maine the other from Tennesee:

Census workers reportedly attacked
HARRINGTON, Maine — Two men were charged last week in separate incidents in which U.S. Census workers allegedly were attacked, according to police.

In Harrington, Wesley Storer, 61, of Bar Harbor was arrested Monday, March 1, and charged with criminal restraint, assault and theft after an incident at an apartment building he owns.

According to Washington County Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Timothy Tabbutt, Storer was intoxicated when he ripped the identification badge off a U.S. Census worker’s lanyard. Storer then blocked the 50-year-old woman from leaving the building, Tabbutt said.

Later that evening, Storer allegedly entered two other dwellings without permission, Tabbutt said, and further charges of criminal mischief, disorderly conduct and two counts of criminal trespassing are under review by the District Attorney’s Office for Washington and Hancock counties.

On Friday, a Brooksville man was summoned after he allegedly assaulted a U.S. Census worker on his doorstep. James Swift, 53, was charged with simple assault after the U.S. Census office reported that one of its workers, a 39-year-old woman, had been grabbed and pushed by the man.

Maine State Police Trooper Greg Roy said the woman knocked on Swift’s door and before she could identify herself, Swift reportedly opened the door, said he was not interested and slammed it shut.

“The woman then did exactly what she was trained to do,” Roy said. “She put the bag of papers on the doorknob and prepared to leave.”

Roy said the man then allegedly opened the door, grabbed the woman by her wrist and pushed her backward.

She did not require medical attention, Roy said.

“She wasn’t injured,” he said. “She just reported it was a very frightening incident.”

Roy said Swift denied all accusations.

I was at a meeting two weeks ago where the head of the Census in Nashville came in and spoke. He said that they were going to be sending most workers out in pairs this year, and in some places groups. He also said that in a few places they intend to go in with police protection. Finally he didn't come out and say it, but he seemed to indicate that there are a few places too dangerous to be counted. He was especially talking about two or three bad rural counties here in Tennessee. He said that there are places with signs that say "Tresspassers will be Shot" and "No Government" he said they don't go near those places.

I got the feeling they were expecting more trouble. He said that in Nashville they are trying to hire people just to work in their neighborhoods, and they were having trouble in some places. In the surrounding counties, they are trying to get locals, and having a little better success. They are hoping the locals will know where they can go and where they should stay away from.

The police concluded that the census worker who was found dead in Kentucky, killed himself and attempted to make it look like a murder. Don't know much about it other than that.

I just filled out my form a few minutes ago. I've already sealed it in its envelope, but I think I remember it specifically stating that if as of April 1, 2010 a person is not going to be residing at the address to which the form was sent, that person should not be listed on the form.

But I guess if you don't know where you're going to be living as of April 1, 2010, it's probably best to put yourself on the form that went to your current address...? At least that way you'd be counted somewhere. Just a guess. There's a phone number on the form to call with questions as well.

Write "Appalachian Trail" on it and get it some congressional seats. I'll run for congress.

If D.C cannot get itself a voting rep or senator, the AT would never be able to... unfortunately. It would be really cool though.

I heard that in 2000 the folks with no fixed abode had been counted wherever they happened to be on Census Day.

Maybe that's how Cold Spring Township, Lebanon County, PA has a population listed, as I don't think there's a habitable structure other than the Rausch Gap Shelter in that municipality. In that case, would someone have hiked in to count the folks in the shelter, or would they have just gone by the register?

Call 1-866-872-6868 if you will be on trail. They will answer your questions.

I informed "customer service" that I'd be out of town after the 16th, so they couldn't follow up with me. It was like Jeopardy; state everything in the form of a question. Apparently they can't say anything except what's on a **** script, and they must talk in a ridiculous monotone; I've never heard an electronic voice come out of a human body . Must be a law!

As stated before, they only care where you'll be on April 1.

With the 2010 census well underway, I thought I'd inquire what hikers and others are doing with regard to it. Using it for personal hygiene purposes.

An individual in an airplane over Kansas, or accepting an Academy award in California, or vacationing on a beach in Florida, or hiking on the Appalachian Trail, still "lives at" his home, wherever that is. If he sold his home or vacated his apartment to hike the AT, then I guess he's officially homeless?

Here's the entire list of questions:

1) How many people were living or staying in your home on April 1, 2010?

2) Were there any additional people other than the ones in question 1? Houseguests, etc. (Asked since 1890)

3) Do you own or rent? (Asked since 1880)

4) What's your telephone number?

5) What is the name (first, last, middle initial) of an adult living in your home? (Asked since 1790)

6) What is that person's sex? (Asked since 1790)

7) What is that person's age and date of birth? (Asked since 1800)

8) Is that person of Latino, Hispanic, or Spanish origin? (Asked since 1970)

9) What is that person's race? (Asked since 1790)

10) Does that person sometimes live somewhere else?

It's pretty simple. They want to make sure everyone's counted, and they don't want to count anyone twice.

When you meet someone on the trail on April 1 and they ask you where you live, do you say, "Under that tree over there," or do you say what's on your license, or student ID, or AARP card?

Just make sure you get counted. (Once.)

I don't see what the problem is with people. It's a constitutional requirement and the questions are very basic, but people continue to be emotionally unbalanced bumholes

I don't understand how these census takers are going to find thru-hikers.
Stand at road crossings and wait perhaps? I doubt it.
Hike in to shelters every night? Not the ones i know.

I did the census before I left in March. I used my house as my residence but indicated there would be other people there. I received a phone call from the census bureau asking me to call in to discuss. It was a quick follow up, largely to make sure people are not counted twice.

I like the John Gault post.
