Camping out at the REI garage sale in Boise.

About 40 of us so far, tents all around the building. Surfing Whiteblaze on my Iphone in my tent. Last year I scored a nice down bag for $35.00.

Anyone else crazy enough to camp out for these garage sales?

Unless I really needed some gear items (plural). I'd go early. My brother-in-law and his brother-in-law went quite early to a sale in Minneapolis (in the winter!).

Closest REI to me is a couple hours, though.

I know a guy who uses the opposite strategy. He arrives for the last few hours. Not much selection, but they practically give stuff away.

Saw the tent outside one of the REI's in Chicago (Oakbrook) and its snowing now, so if anyone camped out, hey, they are ready for hiking!

My strategy is to get in the first group. I have gone twice and arrived around 6 and got in the first group both times. You don't need to camp out, but you do have to show up before the crowd. I saved 219 bucks on a essentially new tent and wasted about 5 hours there. That is $43.80 an hour. It is more than I make.

I just came home with a giga power stove, a NF down jacket, a pack for my dog and a pair of vortex gaiters all in new condition for grand total of $53.00.

I was number three in line. I passed my buddy a almost new big Agnes down bag for $40.00. I'm happy.

Sounds like it was worth the wait. I thought they weren't reselling used bags though ?

They had a few used bags and this one was darn near new, only the pad sleeve had a small tear which is getting repaired as I type this. It was a party atmosphere and we all woke up picking up empty beer cans.
