View Full Version : Mass. maps...
My fiancee and I were thinking about doing some of the AT in Massachussettes this summer, along with the high peaks in the ADK's that we are doing to get in shape for our LT end-to-end in August-September. What I'm looking for is the best map I can get of the AT in the Mass section, or Northeast if need be. I haven't researched any maps on the AT yet so tell me what to get, thanks people...

I'm not sure about the AT maps, but the Berkshires Natural Resources council publishes several maps:

The South Taconics map is great; I don't have the Berkshire map, but it looks good online.
Have you hiked on the Taconic trails (S. Taconic, Taconic Skyline, Taconic Crest)?
I'm looking for a map of the AT in the Mass. section that has shelters, distances, resupply towns etc. etc...
Yes, I have hiked some of the Taconic crest trail, we plan to finish that one as well.

BNRC has three maps, Greylock, Yokum Ridge and South Taconic, I have all three and they are without question the best I have seen for the Berkshires. Each map contains the local history as well. A nice 4-6 day loop would be the South Taconic Trail north bound starting at the southern terminus to Catamount ski area, to the AT at Jug End, AT south to Sages Ravine, Bear Mtn. then over to Frissel and Brace back south to the southern terminus of the South Taconic Trail. This loop has serveral good climbs, Bash Bish falls and great views to the west on the STT and to the east from the AT at Jug End, Race and Bear Mtns. Shouldn't need to resupply or need a shuttle for this loop.

On one side: MA Map One: Sections 1,2,3 Vermont Line to Dalton
Reverse side: MA Map Two: Sections 4,5,6 Dalton to Upper Goose Pond
On One Side: MA Map Three: Sections 7,8,9 Upper Goose Pond to Jug End
On reverse side: MA Map Four: Section 10 Conn: Sections 1,2,3
Jug End to Cornwall Bridge
I Highly recommend these maps: waterproof, profile of the trail with every mile marked, trail, shelters, water marked in color, contour lines, mileage, road crossings, town maps with symbols of available services
I second rambler's suggestion. Get the guidebook with maps and you will not be sorry.
