It's a done deal. All my ducks are in a row, all of my gear is purchased and packed, and I embark on what I call my Fool's Journey on April 1st, 2011. I've been spending hours trying to estimate where I'll be and when, then decided to just throw the itinerary away and walk. Don't know where I'll be when I stop each day, but I've decided to relax and just let it happen. This will make mail drops and bounce boxes harder, so I welcome any advice anyone might have in this regard, but I just can't plan on hiking 15 miles a day every day. I want to plan ahead as much as possible because I have to get off the trail for 2 weeks in May, but I don't know where I'll be, so arranging flights is impossible. Guess I'll rent a car and drive back home to central Texas then. But I also don't know how to arrange kennelling my dog through the Smokies and again in Maine, since I don't know when I'll be there.

The "Approach Trail" is a 8.8 mile spur trail that starts near the Amicalola Falls Lodge and runs up to the summit of Springer Mt., where the AT officially begins.

Some people choose to walk that trail, some get dropped off closer to the summit. There's a parking area about 1.2 miles north of the summit - you would walk back south, sign the registry, then head back north toward Maine! :sun

I could be off a bit on the official miles, but that's a rough estimate.

Too funny - yes, I suppose I could start practicing the 'righting myself' thing...lol.

You will figure out the underquilt setting up in about 5 seconds. It's a no-brainer, really - clip at the head, clip at the feet. See you out there...

The tension on the under quilt is important. You want the quilt snugged up around you so there aren't any air gaps between your hammock and you UQ. Best to set it up and have someone outside your hammock checking it out. Then sleep in the hammock overnight to see if the shock cords stretch during the night. If so you may need to add an extra piece of shock cord or two over your ridge line.

Since I was 16 and first heard about the AT I have been obsessed with the idea of doing a thru-hike. Over the past 11 years something has always come up to prevent me from going, but not this year. I am ready and more charged than ever. Unfortunatly I will not be able to do a complete thru-hike, but I will be able to do half of of the trail and I am totaly stoked. I don't have a definitive date set for my departure yet, but I am thinking between April 1st and the 10th I would like to be stepping foot on the aproach trail to Springer.

Is anybody else pondering starting around these dates?

An update from my earlier post:

I haven't settled on a trail name yet. If one happens my way along the trail I will be happy to accept it. As for now I am tentatively calling myself 'Odd Duck'. I plan on flying into Atlanta on April 6th and hopefully be on the trail on the 7th. As for the approach trail, I was up there a few days ago and spent some time in Amacalola Falls State Park. The approach trail looks like it might be a bit on the strenuous side but if I'm going to hike 2000+ miles I better get used to it. The earlier the better, so yes I am doing the approach trail.
