The approach trail leads you to the beginning of the AT at Springer from the state park. Best I recall it's about 8 miles. You don't have to hike it to get to the AT, someone will correct me if I'm wrong but, there's a trailhead that you can enter the AT on about a mile or so into the AT. Some people get on the trail there, and backtrack to where the AT starts. I've heard of hikers doing this, and I've also heard that the approach is part of the experience. I've yet to hike the AT so I can't say one way or the other. I suppose this comes into play, HYOH. (hike your own hike)

OMG - how exciting! I've been off the site for a couple of weeks and wowy, wow, wow - we've got a whole bunch of new 'classmates'. :welcome I'm going to take a little while here and go back and read everyone's messages. This makes it feel so much more real right now.

I also read an AT Conservancy Facebook post that said the tail end of the 2010 Class has passed thru Springer now. THAT really makes it feel real to me. We're next!

I've already started to make some small adjustments to things here at home. For 24 years I've been the one in our marriage that heads up the mail opening, check cashing, bill paying, ect. I've begun setting up automatic debits for all the bills that offer it, so my husband won't have to deal with that. I've always done our taxes (but not before mid-March!), so I'm committing to having that finished before I leave next year.

One of my biggest fears is that I'm going to forget something. Not gear-wise, forget something that has to be finished at home before I leave. Anyone else worry about that??? I want to be able to enjoy our little walk in the woods. ;)

Are you my twin? I've been married 25 years. My husband never had a checking account before he married me and I put him on mine. I just 20 min ago had a conversation with him about teaching him to do the money stuff. (then I come online and find your post.) I have always overpaid the bills so that I get the occasional "do not pay this bill'. Now, I just continue to (over)pay everything so that he will have a month or 2 with no or very few bills. I am turning off several things we now pay for. I will re-finance the house in Dec and take enough cashout to pay off our credit card.
I'm going on Depo in Sep so I don't bleed in the woods. I have talked with my doc about what meds I might need on an extended trip and I will be getting scripts for those in the coming months.
I will be getting my eyes checked in Jan and then new glasses just before I leave (2 or 4 pair?).
OK, what have I forgot?

OK, what have I forgot?

That's too funny Dee! You went so far as to put him on your checking - wow, you're a better man than I. All these years it's just my name (of course his paycheck gets deposited directly nonetheless), but I may have to break down and add him next Feb. Hope he can figure out how to fill in a check...lmao! I like the way you say "I will re-finance the house" ;) ... I think you ARE my twin. "We" bought some income property about 15 years ago (owner financed), we did a re-fi last year and he found out for the first time, he was never actually on the title! :p

Anyway - don't forget the dentist, last thing you want on the trail (besides you-know-what) is a toothache! I'm trying to coordinate this year's visits so I can get my 6 month check-up at the end of Feb.

I'm not going to overpay anything, that would just confuse him further - plus, I think after 25 years it's high-time he realizes just what we owe every month! I can't complain too much though, it's been my stealth money managing that's allowed me to sock away as much as I have for this trip. ;)

Isn't it funny how we've both found men that are so laid-back about it? Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining (well, maybe a little), I could never be 'not in-charge' of the finances, don't think I could sleep at night....and probably the same for him, hope he CAN sleep at night once he has to start dealing with it all! In the end, we're perfectly suited for each other. :sun THAT kids is what makes a marriage work!

You can drive almost to the top of springer. If I remember correctly, its only about a mile or so away from the parking lot.

There is a forest service road that runs near springer. Luddite has it correct that it is about a mile away. Once you get to the terminus you have to come back down the way you just came. Its not a bad option especially if you have family or friends that are seeing you off at the terminus.

Hi Sherry/Turtle Feet
Thanks for the reminder on the dentist. I see mine every 3 months d/t having a whole host of problems in my mouth. I had 27 surgeries between Oct '07 and Nov '08.
The DH is on the checking account, but isn't allowed to carry a checkbook. He carries a debit card, but I have him trained that he doesn't use it without consulting me first. He's not allowed a credit card. Before anyone passes judgement on our relationship, you need to understand that I had no debt prior to meeting him. In the 1st year of our relationship, he ran up nearly $5K in debt (jewelry and musical equipment mostly). We almost had to declare bankruptcy, but narrowly avoided that.
After 25 years of marriage, he finally understands that a $15.99 item isn't $15, but $17. Progress!
I love mine dearly and we are VERY suited to one another. It's not the relationship my parents would prefer me to be in. I works really well for us and I am very happy.

Hey there! I'm DreamChaser. I'm from south Jersey, planning my thru hike next spring as well. Have you done any lengthy hikes so far, alone? I've done a few and plan on doing several more to prepare. I attended Trail Days a few weeks ago. Everyone I talked to said that even though you go out on the hike alone, there are fellow hikers daily that you run into. Are you going to the Hiker Feed in Duncannon, Pa in July or the Gathering in W.V. come October? I'm planning on attending both to continue to gather first-hand info from both previous thru hikers and current ones. Have a good day. Happy Hiking! :)

The time has finally arrived for me to be able to take the plunge. After several section hikes I'm going to Thru-Hike in 2011. I'll be leaving Springer Mtn. Northbound on or around April 1st, 2011. I haven't decided if I'll hike the Approach Trail or not, and probably won't decide until next year.

I don't have a Trail Name yet. I've never found one I really liked. I've tried out a few and been given a few, but they just didn't fit. One was even cursed!

Only nine months to go and I'm starting to get really excited and even a little nervous. The reality of what I'll be doing less than a year from now is slowly sinking in. This is a trip I've been dreaming and thinking about for almost 13 years and it's finally going to happen.

Right now I'm focusing on work and saving up as much money as possible so I won't have to worry about finances during or after the hike. I'm also turning a critical eye towards my gear and thinking about what I need to buy and what I want to replace.

This is going to be the trip of a lifetime. I've spent many years waiting for the right time and it's coming next spring, so hear's to good weather, good hiking, and great views!

It has been a while since I last posted on this thread. I am very excited since I finally retire on June 30th. Everything is in place (well almost everything) for me to leave in early March. Reading all of your entries builds even more excitement for me.

I am heading out this weekend on the AT/LT in the Killington area in Vermont for a couple of nights. My fractured wrist is finally healing from a slip I took on Bear Mtn (Conn) 6-7 weeks ago. That is my one fear: injury. Last fall I twisted my leg on the Cat Rocks in NY and tore a maniscus in my knee. It is tough getting old ... and I am still fairly young. (no comments from you 20-somethings out there. lol)

What is your fear or anxiety for 2011? Whatever it may be, we all will get a chance to face it head on next year.

Happy Trails to all of us 11'ers. :)

Today I walked to take the train to work. It's only 3 miles (and 3 more coming home), I've done much longer walks recently, but it's the first time I've walked anywhere since I decided I'm going next year. So it feels like a bigger thing than it is. Going to try to do this at least a couple times a week.

When I told my wife how early I was going to get up today, she looked at me like I was insane. But not when I told her I wanted to hike the AT. I guess that's good :)

Injury is my biggest fear as well. In 2007 I started in Harper's Ferry intending to hike to Katahdin. I only made it about sixty miles into PA. I fell and twisted my right ankle pretty badly. I had to get off the trail and spent almost a month on crutches. I was extremely disappointed and depressed that such a small slip of the foot ended my grand hiking plan. I got on the trail again in NY 5 weeks later but I wasn't fully healed. I only averaged about 4.5 miles a day and had to take at least one zero day a week. It took me almost a month to hike from the Greymoor Monastary to the Mass. Turnpike, but it was better than sitting at home feeling sorry for myself. I took another month off the trail to heal (and for prior commitments) then went up to the White Mountains for two weeks. I hiked some of the AT through the Whites and bagged 10 of the 48 Four-Thousand Footer's.

In the end, I never realised my plan to hike the northern half the AT that summer. I did, however, learn a lot about hiking, met some great people and enjoyed every minute I spent on the trail. It was the best summer of my adult life. I can only hope that next year will be even better and injury free. Thru-Hiking the AT has been a dream of mine for years and I'm finally in a position to take off for six months and go for it. No matter what happens, I'll at least be doing something that I love.

Not being able to complete my second thru hike is my biggest fear. As you know, the drop out rate for second timers is extremely high. Why is this, you say? Second timers should know what's coming. That's just it, we know what's coming.

I hiked about 500 miles of the Trail in 2003, about 1000 miles in 2007. This time I'm bringing my dog Seamus. I can tell that age is having an accelerating effect on me, so I am focusing on weight loss and training a LOT more--walking to work and back, usually with Seamus, so I get 10 miles per day and he gets about 8. I still have lots of food and gear to prepare, but now that it's less than 8 months, I'm starting to get that buzz of anticipation.

Hi Goez - it is great to meet someone else from Bloomington here. In my case, I'm a bit of a "road warrior" when it comes to work, so I'm not actually residing there at the moment. But, I am in town from time to time, so we can surely have a burrito at Laughing Planet or a frosty libation at Ncks sometime. Great to hear that you are in the 2011 planning stage also. I've talked to a couple of other guys here that are targeting NOBO mid-March of 2011. I'll probably be back in town during the next couple weeks. No.. I'm gonna get some folks to meet me on springer with some cold sierra nevadas and other good things to end the hike with.. I don't feel like bracing myself for 8 miles of downhill to do an unofficial part of the AT that i have walked already.

I'm beyond excited. I get out jsut about every weekend now.. and find it very tough to turn around when on trails to head back towards the trailhead after a day or two of solitude and bliss. I can't wait til the day that I can just keep going until I hit Springer..

One of my best friends "talked me into" hiking th AT back in 1991. He bailed on me, but I headed to Springer anyway. I made it to Harpers's Ferry & had the time of my life! I quickly found out that I'd rather hike "alone". But I really look forward to meeting up w/ fellow hikers at camp & in towns. Don't be nervous-it's no big deal;)

I'm hopping back on the AT next summer to finish the journey. See ya out there. :banana

Approach Trail - I assume so...do I really have a choice?

I'm a mom of 4 kids, all of whom are either adults or on the brink of adulthood. I tried to convince them to come with me, but not one of them thought that this sounded like a good plan. My 21-year-old niece, however, does! Her time is limited, however, so I'll only have her with me for a little while at the start of my hike; after that I'm on my own...except that I really think I'll bring my best buddy with me: Tessa, my 15-pound Jack Russell terrier.

I've been planning this for about two years. I hoped to go last year but life got in the way. This spring I'm on my way, and I'm both really excited and really nervous. Will I be able to do it? Do I have what it takes mentally? Time will tell. I'm not pretending that it will be just a walk in the park. I know it will be hard. I also believe it will be one of the most incredible things I have ever done, and I'm psyched. I have most of my gear, except clothing and shoes. Otherwise, I'm ready! I've been amping up the workouts in anticipation, and I hope to have a reasonable amount of stamina by the time I commence.

I love that there are so many folks beginning about the same time I am. I think we should tie some sort of a flag to our packs so we can recognize one another as members of the WhiteBlaze class of 2011.

I wish everyone the best! Happy Trails!

Hey tamijo! Sounds like we're at the same place in life :D My youngest will be 20 next spring and he's hoping to hike a few weeks with me once he's finished with school for the year.

This trip has been on my 'bucket list' for at least 25 years. Now that the kids are pretty much on their own, I'm heading out. The hubby is very supportive and I think secretly looking forward to this hike as much as I am (he's not hiking..lol).

Looks like you'll be starting a little after me, but there's a really good chance you'll catch me! I'll be taking a 2 day break at the end of March for our wedding anniversary too.

Love the little 'flag' idea! Hammockforums.net does something similar but uses a buff that the forum members voted on. That was a fun little contest and then the winning design was produced by the Buff Co. people.

See you on the trail!

Hey guys so I'm still in school and Im planning on hiking the trail for 3 months next summer during the break. So my problem is i can't start until may 3, and i am worried that there won't be enough people that far south on the trail. Not that i am scared of being by myself or anything, but i don't want to miss out on all of the camaraderie that the AT is known for. I really want to start at Springer, but i think i might just start farther north where there will be more thru hikers, and going as far as i can before the semester starts. Any thoughts on this? I know it goes against many peoples view of the trail, and thru hiking legit would easily be my first option, but unfortunately, at this time it isn't an one. I appreciate any feedback thanks!

You can do what is called a flip-flop. You could start out further up the trail and hike in one direction going NoBo. Then when you have a chance to come back and finish you can start in that same spot and go in the opposite direction SoBo. Its what ever works for you man.

At Springer Mt. in GA, there's an 8 mile hike to actually get to the 'official' southern terminus of the AT. Those 8 miles aren't included in the official milage for the trail, and there IS a road that can be driven further up the mountain to get you closer to the start of the trail (you actually need to backtrack a couple of miles). ;)

You can pretty much count on those 8 miles as being your first day, so if you're super pressed for time or on a strict schedule, you could 'skip' the approach trail.

I'll be starting roughly March 13th - 15th, somewhere in there. Look forward to meeting everyone - sounds like we're going to have a fabulous

At Amicalola Falls, Ga. there is a trail that will take you 8.8m UP to Springer Mt.
FS 42 will take you to the AT where its about a mile to the top of Springer. That mile is the one time you backtrack...until Katahdin....maybe.:D

LOL! Judging by the preambled information above, all I know is I'm going north sometime next year. (-:

I intended to go SOBO this year after I graduated, but was too chicken to do it. I was afraid I wouldn't be able to find a job after I got back if I quit the one I have now.

So, next year I'll be in a much more solid financial position and will surely benefit from an extra year of local hiking experience. I know my pack weight will be a lot lower next year than it would have been if I had left in August like I had planned. Being a newbie to the whole hiking thing and having a lifetime of experience car camping, I went nuts and bought every last little gizmo and doodad I could find. I totally missed the fact that I'd be walking the majority of the time, and need to be comfortable doing that as opposed to being super-comfortable in camp.

So now instead of my 140 lb self lugging 60 lbs of gear & consumables so I can camp in style, I carry a 30 lb pack so I can hike like a champ. My priorities have definitely changed...

I canceled a SOBO attempt for 2010 because I was afraid I wouldn't be able to find a job when I got back. Now I'm planning a NOBO 2011 for April, but am sprouting chicken wings again...now thinking SOBO 2011 would be better...

The plane has been circling the jump zone for two years now...when am I going to just jump and trust that the parachute will open? Somebody kick me in the kiester and shove me out the door. What's the worst that can happen, end up mooching off mommy and defaulting my student loans?

Speaking from the position of having two masters degrees, that's pretty darn sad, isn't it? Right now I have two jobs working 70 hours a week and am grossly overqualified for both. I sometimes wonder if I wasted my time in grad school.

Hey Phillip

Do what the Special Forces do. Make a HALO jump. High Altitude Low Opening You will get there a lot quicker. :D I'll see you out there on the trail with all the other 59 or 60 somethings. It is alot better to be circling the jump zone than circling the drain.

Hey! That sounds like a trail name for me....HALO (High altitude, low opening). I always tell people, "I feel like I'm going through life in a traffic jam riding somebody's back bumper all the time". Antherwords, I run a little faster than most in everything I do. I even hike faster than most; sort of the, "I'll sleep when I'm dead, so let's go!" mentality.

HALO. I like it. That acronym sums up my personality quite well. Plus it can't hurt if it makes people think I'm talking about a Halo, so they think I'm just a really nice guy, which I am for the most part. (-: Thanks!

Hiked the PCT in 2009 and the CDT this year(2010). Hiking the AT in 2011 will be the Triple Crown in Three years... Why? Well I always liked the number 3. Also it will be nice to see fellow hikers on the trail again. Wyoming had more Pronghorns than people! I hear there are even a few shelters out there on the AT. This is going to be awesome!

I've been dreaming of the thru hike for years since a 600 mile SoBo trek in 2005, but it seems like it's never the right time. Feels right now though. See you all in Georgia!

I know how ya feel...I've been trying to get back to the trail since I had a taste 4 years ago in Maine. Keep saying I'm gonna go, I'm gonna go and when it gets to that time, I always have an excuse why I can't. This time I'm just doing it...period!

The Approach Trail is the 8.4 miles or so that begin at Amicalola Falls State park and head up Springer to the first blaze which marks the official start of the trail. Some people do the approach, some don't.

Sounds like you may be starting a few days before me, but maybe we'll cross paths at some point!

I could be off by a few, but best I can figure we have approx. 177 2011 thru-hikers registered on this thread so far.

I've got 184 so far. I've uploaded the spreadsheet and, hopefully, it will be available for viewing soon (attroll is probably still hiking).

Good Luck and Have Fun next year!! (If anyone needs to update anything let me know.)

See you on the trail,

I'm sure you're 100% more right than I am. :) All I did was subtract out the "non-registry" posts from the "registry" posts (all the while watching the Wisconsin/ Michigan State game), but I didn't really account for multiple hikers, as in "my husband and I are....".

Yes I hiked this year got as far as the top of Mt Washington and had to abandon my hike as my visa was expiring on the 15th Sept which left me only a few days to clean up and get to New York. So I am doing it all over again yep the whole trail and hopefully getting to Katahdin this time next year.
I had such a good time that its no big deal to do it all again.
Yes I have a trail journal account of my hike.
