If you are not hiking on the AT, then you wont see many hikers and the campsites generally arent too crowded. There will be folks out doing the wildflower tours, but they are generally bunched around the easy access areas, within 5 mile of the roads.

Weather can be unpredictable that time of year in the Smokies. Expect cold, rainy days. Typically, the thru hikers complain about getting 4-5 days of rain when they are hiking through the park. Also, the park gets at least one snowstorm in the month of April. Sometimes it is early, sometimes late, but you can count on one snow sometime in April of more than 6 inches.

It is possible to have 4 or 5 days of nice weather too, but that is rare. Plan for rain, snow, and sleet and be happy if it doesnt arrive. :)
