View Full Version : Parking near Smokemont
I am hiking the BMT through the Smokies in May and it just dawned on me that Smokemont campground will be closed through the middle of May. I was planning on staging a car at the campground but now need an alternative area.
Anyone got any ideas where to safely leave a car for several days?
Thanks
Smokemont is open year round

Smokemont is open year round. The park is upgrading many roads and facilities up through May but I just checked their website and Smokemont is not on the list. I assume it is open, if any doubts just call the park office and ask.

Sorry my bad, I just went a little further into their website and it is closed for renovations from March 10 - May 27.

Well in that case, park at the baptist church at the bridge at the entrance to Smokemont. The BMT passes right by the church

An alternate plan if you are worried about it is to park in Cherokee at Cherokee Transit and pay them $7 for the ride to Smokemont.
Well I am starting at Twenty-mile so I don't think the Cherokee Transit will work.
Where is the church. I don't remember seeing it when I camp at Smokemont but sometimes I am not very observant.
You can't miss it. Driving out of Cherokee, take a right at the bridge into smokemont campground. After crossing the bridge, stop and look at the church directly in front of you 25 yards up the hill. There is parking for about 10 cars on the right (South) side of the church

Thanks for the pic. I still don't remember it but like I said sometimes I can be pretty unobservant. Should I tell the rangers or anyone that I will be leaving my car there for 4 or 5 days.

Twentymile is safe. I've left vehicles there numerous times.
