I am thinking about a section hike GA to TN starting about June 15th and have a few questions for anyone with knowledge of the conditions at that time of year.

1. What kind of weather would be typical. Is it oppressively hot?

2. Is a 45 degree sleeping bag adequate?

3. Any other issues bugs, water availability etc.

Thanks in advance

How far you heading into Tenn.

I am not going to try to predict the weather this year. It was very dry 07-08. Dry for a bit then got wet in 09. And then we had all these snow storms to start off 2010. But it seems a lot of people are predict a wet year. Just keep an eye on the weather when it gets closer to your trip. But its going to be HUMID.

Bag- 45 will be fine. The humidity will keep you warm for the most part.

Bugs and Critters- Mice at shelters. Bears will be out so hang properly and far. Flys and mosquitos but not too bad.

You didn't ask this specifically but being from the West and new to WB, perhaps you're not aware of the rules & regs regarding the Smokies (http://www.nps.gov/grsm/index.htm). Since you're hiking from GA to TN, the Park Service considers you a "thruhiker" so you need not make shelter reservations. But please bear in mind (pun intended) that in Smokies, you must stay at the Shelters, i.e. no camping along the Trail between them.

Read about the rules here (http://www.nps.gov/grsm/planyourvisit/backcountry-camping.htm). There are also WB threads on this subject - check out the Smokies threads from the Forums menu.
