Taking my 9 and 11 yr old for their first overnight. Any suggestions on the approach trail for stopping points? They've done 5 miles a few times with packs and did well, so even the full 7+ would be cool.
Thanks

There are a few along the way and Black Gap Shelter is at 7.3 on the Approach Trail. At 8.8 from Amicalola Falls is Springer with camping sites and another shelter.

There are several nice campsites just a few miles into the Approah Trail.

Is there a FS road at Frosty Mtn? If that's the place I remember, There was a group of drunken car campers there the last time I hiked it. Stay away from roads. I'd go all the way to Springer.

Yes there is. It's the one out of the back side of Amicalola. There's another at Nimblewill Gap. Any campsites I recall are a fair distance from either road.

Another comment on hiking distance for the kids... you can save a mile of hiking by parking at the top of the falls instead of at the visitors center. That'll knock the distance down to both Black Gap and Springer shelters that you'll have to walk.

Enurdat1...your neighbor here from Murphy. When are you planning your hike? I'm starting a section hike from AFSP to Neels on Easter Sunday morning. Maybe I'll see you all on the Approach Trail? Happy hiking. :)

Hi, My wife and I actually live in Robbinsville, but have a house in Conyers Ga too (we both work around Atl, so it's better than driving and cheaper than a hotel). I'm looking at tuesday early, then back down Wed. Thinking maybe up the approach trail, and then back down the Hike Inn trail. Gotta do some gear scrounging this weekend, or Monday. Short a pack (coming, but not sc heduled to be here till next weekend), and a few odds and ends. Hope to see you ther, have a great trip.

I've seen worse, but still, it's close to a road.

When I went through there Nov. 09, there were beer cans everywhere. One of the guys who was sleeping in a car woke up when we walked through because his dog wouldn't quit barking. I said something about the beer cans. The place was mostly cleaned up the next day.
