After I summit Kathadin, assuming I make it that far, my plan is to hike back down the mountain and get picked up by my wife and kids.

What would be:

1. A good place (hotel preferably) for them to stay the night before picking me up?

2. Where would be a good place to meet them to get picked up.

The simpler, the better.

Last month I stayed at Katahadin Cabins (http://www.katahdincabins.com/) the night before a winter trip to Baxter Peak. Entirely adequate for the 10 hours I was there. 4 star hotel? Absolutely not. Nice family owned and run place. I did need a reservation, though it was in snowmobile season. For the money, I found it to be reasonable in every fashion.

Well, I won't have any support to get from Katadyn to Amtrak. What do others do?

Sorry if this seems like hijacking, just thought it was related. K2

You can take a bus from nearby Medway to Bangor, where plane and bus service to Phil are available.

search Amtrak. my bus tickets were included in my trip from Wilmington, Del. short 2 hr. layover in Portland, but enough time for a lobster dinner :)

You can get a shuttle or a hitch easily from Millinocket to Medway. . . from there the bus can get you to Bangor, Portland, Boston or wherever. . .

buff jeff -

I went up to Maine last summer out of South Jersey to walk the 100-Mile Wilderness - maybe this can help you out:

Cyr Bus Lines offers service out of Medway - hitch from Millinocket or the taxi service was about $10 1-way last summer.

Concord Bus Lines goes out of Bangor to Boston's Logan Airport or South Station (I think that's the one - food court and news stands available there as well) where you can walk a little ways and connect to Amtrak for all points south.

As you probably know, seeing as how you live on the Main Line it's going to be easier to get out of 30th Street Station in Philly than the bus station (which I've been told is in South Philly somewhere).

Greyhound also has service into Mt. Laurel, NJ - but based on personal experience of riding the bus from there to Medway it was a l-o-n-g overnight ride with 2 bus changes (NY Port Authority and BOS w/ multi-hour layovers in the night) and the train was much nicer on the return.

Good luck with your hike!
