I picked one up at Campmor for my kids. This design allows even a little one to make a lot of noise - you don't need to be a windbag like me to get noticed. Foretunately I had a proper 4th grade education (at recess) - learned how to whistle loudly with my fingers. And those nuns said it would be useless - HA! :p

Actually, we have a fellow named Ron Foxcroft from Canada to thank for that design. Mr. Foxcroft was the inventor of the first pealess whistle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fox_40). They're sold under the brand name Fox40 (http://www.fox40world.com/index.cfm?pagepath=PRODUCTS/Find_YOUR_Whistle_&id=13304).

I carry the classic 3 chamber model. They make great holiday giveaways!

......If you're cheap a plastic zip tie works too.

I've been an Ocean Lifeguard for over a decade at the Jersey Shore and have always used a Fox 40 Classic. Comes in almost any color---even glow in the dark---and is the best whistle by far!!!

Yeah, but Wal-Mart has a whistle that is a whistle-compass-magnifying glass combo. Cool!

Yep, and a magnetized needle floating on a leaf in a cup of water will always point North too.........

Yea but would you attach it to your pack?

If your hiking with the right crowd you can just blow into an empty beer bottle.

Having run into black bears on the trail....and sometimes backpacking alone, I know that this type of whistle will move the bears away (been there done that) and I also know that I am much more likely to get heard if lost or injuried than just screaming.

If you want to do the screaming test to test this...feel free. Within several minutes you will get out of breath and/or hoarse, your voice is not very directional....and if you are injured...you will never be able to fund the energy it takes to scream.

The above is based upon my real life experience...not some advertising copy.

Having a whistle is worthless if you can't reach it quickly and easily....regardless of whethor you are sitting/standing/on your back/or on your belly. The slickest method I have seen is to use one of those cheap retractable ID badge spools and clip it to the front of your pack harness.

The spool keeps the whistle handy and makes sure that you don't leave it at home or anywhere else...when you really need it.

Here is a video that compares a variety of whistles, but doesn't include the storm whistle unfortunately. The first one is interesting, but not all that loud.

Here is another good video, better test, but only 3 whistles.
