I couldn't find another forum like this, but I think it could a fun question. What do you all do when you're sitting around at camp passing time? Any interesting games you guys made up or enjoy, just whatever.

tell stories like:

Hiker Joe was telling his fellow hikers back on the shelter about his first visit to a big-city church.

"When I got there, they had me park my old truck in the corral," Joe began.

"You mean the parking lot," interrupted Charlie, a more worldly fellow.

"I walked up the trail to the door," Joe continued.

"The sidewalk to the door," Charlie corrected him.

"Inside the door, I was met by this dude," Joe went on.

"That would be the usher," Charlie explained.

"Well, the usher led me down the chute," Joe said.

"You mean the aisle," Charlie said.

"Then, he led me to a stall and told me to sit there," Joe continued.

"Pew," Charlie retorted.

"Yeah," recalled Joe. "That's what that pretty lady said when I sat down beside her."

any more campfire stories:D

the best nights are when NOBO and SOBO meet at the camp on the same night.

Thru-hiker Twister! I met a thru last year named Honeydew carrying a tyvek, Twister spotted, groundsheet. He also carried a compass that was converted into the spinner for the game.

A checker/chess board drawn with a sharpie on a thermarest also works well for rainy days!

I like playing 9 Men's Morris (also called Merrills)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nine_Men%27s_Morris

The ccf pad my board is on is retired & I havn't put one on the new one, I use sticks & stones for the game pieces. Player 1 gets sticks, player 2 gets stones.

This is a very old game, in medevil times it was very popular in taverns: meaning you can play it while drinking :p OR, for us, you can play it when tired.

I even have a 9' x 9' canvas board, no not a typo that is 9 foot by 9 foot, that I use to teach large groups to play on. The pieces are 4" x 4" x 4" blocks of wood. It is not backpacker friendly.

Cribbage is a great game, just a deck of cards, and can bring a small travel board if you want, not needed though, if you track points on a pad of paper.

If you have a deck of cards, Nertz is a fun game if you have more than 4 people. You'll also need some sort of table though, so maybe not something you can easily play around a camp fire.

Cosmic wimpout is a good game. You can also draw a checker board on the inside of a priority mail tyvek envelope for chess or checkers, or draw a backgammon board.

The same board and compass/spinner was on the PCT in 2008. We played Twister on top of Mount Whitney.

There's a fun game called "Scare the Weekender." which usually involves fake stories about bears, or real stories about hiker trash.

Cribbage seems to be extremely popular.

Exactly. Who has the energy to play any kind of long drawn out games? I just want to change my clothes, have some tea, make dinner, and GO TO SLEEP!

Checkers made from the rocks. Gather white and black then draw the board on a piece of tyvek or in the dirt. Also we like to play "Secret of Drawing the Moon." Anyone know King Elephant?

Like the time my friend and I were having a conversation about batteries for his camera, and as we walked up to a crowded overlook he loudly said, "Yeah, everything's better since I started using lithium." You should have seen that place clear out.

I get that every time people recognize me from WB.

Sort of my thoughts. I prefer walking to spending a lot of time in camp anyway. I'd rather walk further than spend a lot of time futzing around in camp.

I remember as a kid playing that on paper, before the cool little boats and grids came along.
