If you cook over a wood fire your pot will eventually wind up yukky on it's sides and bottom.

By accident I found a product that cleans the soot and tar off with ease.

Use liquid Chaffing Fuel as the cleaning fluid. Pour some in a shallow paper plate, wrap the sides of the pot with paper towels, put the pot in and soak over night. (I only soaked the bottom overnight for this photo session) It only took one min. to clean the bottom from start to finish. Use a paint scraper instead of a single edge razor, I think it's workk better. The razor blade was too sharp and kinda dug into the metal and made some skid marks

Liquid Chaffing fuel can be purchased at many big box stores or restaurant supply stores like Gordon Food Supplies (GFS) It's used for warming trays of buffet food. Can be bought one at a time or by the case. Makes a good summer time fuel for alcohol stoves that are wickatized. This stuff needs a wick to burn. Wick stoves are great!!!!! :D

YUKKY, but smelled good

Interesting. They used to tell us in Scouts to soap our pans before using them on wood, and they would clean easy.

The soap does work. Over the decades, you build up a fascinating and intricate pattern of marks where the little parts you miss gather soot. Gives it character.

I'd guess this product would remove all that, though. May give it a try. Great tip, thanks!

Most chafing dish burners just burn alcohol. I would guess this stuff is just denatured or propyl alcohol. I don't have a pan dirty enough to test this, but my guess is that alcohol, a hot rinse followed by soap and a curly stainless steel pad would reproduce this. Good find, though. Thanks for the tip.

Agreed - I always thought liquid chafing is simply sterno which is jelled alcohol. I would imagine alcohol. heet or even pain thinner would do as well of a job. I do know that Swix wax remover works to remove blacken from pots.

There are two kinds, the one you see in the photo and the gelled alcohol.

The one in the photo has a wick sticking in the center when you take the cap off.

The video shows the viscosity of the fluid when I take the pot off the paper plate and brush it down. There is a liquid variety.

Maybe one of you out there will have a use for this type of product to get your pot clean. I never thought this stuff would work so well.

Look at this pot, it came clean using chaffer fuel

Remember to wash your hands before urinating after touching creasote.

Got your attention?

I just heard a story about Chimney Sweeps dying early from testicular cancer by accidental transfer of creasote to the genitals.

I have not tried to research it, but heard it from my local sweep!
