The AT culture, a good one, yet have you thru-hikers and old pros noticed that, like habits of most cultures, a language, a psychological white washing occurs as well. The very thing you wish to escape creeps in and the language of succeeding as taught by the "familiarites" of the trail becomes commonplace. You subliminally accept the norm, like it or not. Is this necessary...the cliquishness...the clique shay?
How do you escape that? Or, does it really matter?

Part of the culture, I speak of, sorry for the sarcasm. Creeper trail and creep in.... I'll try to explain this way. First, may I suggest viewing the 12 hour documentary, "The Century of Self, produced by the BBC.

Then, ask isn't part of our primal scream to escape this white washing? Yet, we, if not aware and careful, fall back in, even on the AT, which I do love and respect.

There are cliques everywhere. People who believe there are "superstars" of the trail. Just ignore them. They don't really matter as much as they think they do. Hike ahead of them if you can't seem to ignore them. I recommend section hiking in order to maintain your own sense of humility.

Anyone heard of the Traveling Circus? Ringleader, Lightning, and Monkey? I hear they are making a documentary but they aren't very popular among the hikers who are actually out there?
