I bought a 3 pack of polyester sox at Wal-Mart for $4.00! They really work very well. No need to spend $12.00-$16.00 per pair for name brand. :)

I once paid $15 for a single pair of Coolmax socks.

Coolmax is polyester!

I've been using men's polyester dress socks and $7 Dollar General nylon T-shirts for years -- both work as well as the brand name alternatives.

Not sure if these would work for you fellows (they are designed to fit women's larger hips and lack the extra space in the crotch for a fellow's package) , but nylon tights work well as a base layer for me - and they are a whole lot cheaper than other light-weight synthetic liners.

I've bought microfiber undies at both Wal-Mart and Target for something like $7/3 pack. They're not the quality of Patagonia or some other big name, but they work just as well. And my polypro long undies from Target ($7/piece a few years ago) are still the warmest ones I own. I've paid the stupid amounts of money for Patagonia and other big brands and was never as warm and comfy as those old cheap polypros.

Thanks for the tip, Mrs. Baggins. Will have to check out the microfiber undies - sometimes commando chats me a bit and bike shorts are too hot.

We have had the same two sets of polypro long underwear for about 10 yrs - one heavy and one mid-weight - got them from an Army surplus store for about $10 each piece. The heavy ones kept me warm on my last adventure in windy weather in the teens.

When your shorts talk to you, it's time to rest and/or get out of the sun.
