You really can't go wrong around Damascus. I'd go for the stretch around Roan Mtn over the humps. The Erwin to Damascus stretch is less crowded than the Mount Rodgers Rec Area North of Damascus. The Grayson Highlands are fun, but every boy scout troop within driving distance seems to flock there.

Fred's trip would be a might strenuous, for most folks -but lovely.

Get a shuttle from Damascus to Fox Creek and Sobo to DAM for ~35 miles.
Or cut it 10 mile short at Creek Junction if you can negotiate a second shuttle.

For no shuttling.
Park at Massie Gap inside Grayson Highlands SP for a coupla bucks a day and explore from Scales to Whitetop with the AT and some blue blazes.
Camping at the Lewis Fork Spur x Mt Rogers Trail night one -10 mile day, Buzzard Rock area night 2 -6 mile day and , back to car via AT about a 12 mile day on 3.

Enjoy
