What style/material underwear is best for hiking and to resist chaffing/rashes?

Boxers are probably best because they cover the chaffing area, Just don't use cotton.

Boxer-briefs in a good wicking fabric. I use the REI branded ones (nylon/spandex), carry two pair and wash them out alternatively. Keeps you clean, dry, and chafe-free.

I'm the last one to advocate spending $25 on underpants, but I gotta agree with this one. Some cheaper varieties that do the same thing are available at Campmor, but still cost over $10.

But how about in a drier climate, say desert? Would underwear be an issue? Has not for me before, but I have only hiked at most for 4 days in desert. I am getting ready for two weeks.

I haven't desert hiked, but Colin Fletcher has, probably more than most of his peers. He inspired me to try "free" hiking. :D

In reality you are better off not wearing any. I had expensive wicking material that chaffed me, I had form fitting lycra that chaffed as well. In the heat of the summer you just have to go without and a pair of lightweight shorts.

I found Reebok boxer/briefs at Dick's for about 1/2 the price of ex-officio, and under armor. They are getting hard to find, I think they might be discontinuing the product.

Boxers provide no support, they're just panty liners for guys. Might as well go free if you're doing that. Although I highly recomment the MH Mountain Kilt.

dont wear any - seriously. buy convertible hiking pants with a mesh liner. these are the way to go. not as hot, dry quicker from sweating, plenty of support.

boxers for me, astroglide for emergency chafing. support is a non issue unless we were talking about breasts. let your boys hang. plus unless youre done having kids, briefs arent good. your um, boys, vary their range from your body for temperature regulation. briefs can cause the swimmers to be both temporarily and permanently impaired.

they worked so well for William Wallace, he had to share his secret with the english
9" inseam boxer briefs are the only things I've found to stay down. Either I keep pulling them down or I get inner thigh chafing. Shorter briefs rise up and I still end up with chafing. I haven't had a problem with butt crack chafing, but some people say briefs help with that too. Unfortunately I can only make one recommendation because there's only one company that I've found that makes 9" inseam boxer briefs. Under Armour.

going to stock up on underarmor b4 my hike. never used the cold gear yet but the heat gears a must have IMO so im sure i cant go wrong
Just in case you don't already know, not all Under Armour briefs fit the same. One size in HeatGear briefs may feel like they are 4" tighter in the M Series.

I disagree. Add a few years and step up aggressively, you might have a different opinion. Mashed boys are unhappy boys.

After 11 years in the Army Infantry it's all commando for me! :D
Most of my crew wears kilts from sportkilt.com. Myself, I like quick drying hiking shorts with a liner - commando sorta. Either way, no chafing. Answer to what do you wear under the kilt? Boots, of course. VSOP

Walmart now has dri-weave boxer briefs for fairly cheap, I just bought some for my last hike. It was 92+ and they worked for me. I took them off in camp and just wore nylon soccer shorts to let things dry out.
Under Armour 9 inch heat gear Boxer Briefs are worth the $20. They wick well and dry very quickly after washing.
I would advise that you wear at least boxer briefs for their support of, well, you know. All doctors that I have spoken with have advised me to wear good, supportive underwear so as to minimize the risk of testicular torsion, a serious medical problem. Of course you cannot prevent most cases but I have been told that minimizing the movement of the testicles is something that all men can do to help prevent this from happening. I personally wear compression shorts while I do anything active.
