She looks nice.

I'm not in charge of the AT, but I say yes.

Could potentially be dangerous if it rolled off the side of the AT. Going uphill could be hard.

Would come in handy on most of the FT. Might need an inflatable raft for some sections.

There's a big thread about this pack over on Hammock Forums. Plenty of information there....

Add a 2 cycle engine (must smoke alot to keep bugs away) and set of handle bars with brake and throttle - wait - the deluxe model could have two additional wheels for better stability.............:sun

I can use it to carry all my cell phone accessories. :)

Seriously though.... there might be some sections where it might work but I'd borrow one to try before I bought one...

Of course you would, but what about that godawful pack/trailer thingy?

Generally speaking it won't work. I can think of a lot of sections where that would be a pain in the ass and some sections where it would be potentially dangerous, such as the areas where the trail is super-thin with a good drop-off.

Some places where it would suck:

Locations with steps

Locations with blowdowns

Locations with ruts

Waterbars

Rocks

I'm sure there's more...

It would be ok for strolling around the mall. Useless in the woods.

Not very practical for my neck of the woods. I can think of plenty of areas in ME/NH where this pack would not work at all and may even be dangerous.

Can the pack be separated from the roller frame and worn in a traditional manner? (I can't tell from the photo and I didn't watch the videos) If so, that would make it marginally more trail-friendly in steep, rocky areas and river fords. But even at that, the pack would be a liability on anything but smooth terrain.

If she decides to buy this pack, let me know when you're going to hike through my area. I don't want to miss it. :D

I always see the ad for that in backpacker and it always makes me laugh.

I imagine that thing only working on paved roads.

I'd like to see someone pull that thing between the PA border and US 30 in Chambersburg.Holy cow.:D

I like to hike the section of the AT in the Stony Valley wilderness near Harrisburg,PA. It would work fine on the rail trail there as well as the stagecoach road but I have my doubts as to how it would work on most of the AT with all the rocks.

I`d really like to be able to use one of these but I am afraid that there are too many trail sections where it just wouldn`t work. My pack is really too heavy but I use all the stuff that I carry!:(

How much of the AT is in federal wilderness areas? This would probably not be allowed there.

"...equipment used for mechanical transport is generally prohibited on all federal lands designated as wilderness. This includes the use of ... wagons, carts, portage wheels ..." (from Wilderness.net)

Yeah, looks like a great idea for the C & O - might prove just a tad unstable in some other places

I didn't think any wheeled units were allowed on the AT period.
In the miles I've done-even if they are allowed-I'd think only 10-15%
where it could be used, maybe I'm wrong in my estimate but I don't see
it as a pack for the AT.
The PCT maybe? Isn't it graded for pack animals?

For all the naysayers...........The wife and I just did Woody to Tesenaee (sp?) the roller pack worked great for my wife. Did not have to convert it to the backpack mode at any time. There was damage to the protective plastic on the frame from all the rocks but I replaced it with a thicker type that should last a long time. I also put a larger wheel with more grip on it that will solve a sliding problem on steep sidegrades and log rain diverters. Pics posted on my page if you want to check it out.
