hey folks,

i am hiking max patch to hot springs. whats the deal with roaring fork shelter? according to the 2010 guide book, its 1.8 miles from the max patch summit. according to people in the area, it has been moved and its more like 5 miles. has any one been up there lately who can give accurate info?

thanks!

I think I was up there about a month ago, 1.8 is correct. Definitely not 5 miles.

Seems like I recall it (roaring fork shelter) being less than two miles from max patch when I was there a year and a half ago. I believe the old shelter was about five or six miles north of the new one ... closer to walnut mountain.

I agree with above. Roaring Fork Shelter is 1.8 north of Max Patch. Walnut Mountain Shelter is just shy of 5miles north of Max Patch. No recent changes that I am aware.

I was there about a month ago and it seemed like much more than 1.8 miles to me. More like 3 or 4 and everyone at the shelter agreed.

so once again it seems i am getting mixed messages. humm...

i am trying to meet up with some folks there, so the location of this shelter is kind of important.

any thoughts on how to find out for sure?

Was there quite recently. I believe the 1.8 figure is correct. Walnut Mt. shelter is a further 4.9 miles North.

1.8 is a good estimate. http://www.scribd.com/doc/5125936/Appalachian-Trail-Elevation-Profiles

Maybe it just seemed like 3 miles.

The discrepancy is probably that the shelter used to be just south of Lemon Gap, but now it is much closer to Max Patch. It got moved a couple of years ago. 1.8 miles sounds right.

Call Curtis at SBF and ask him to hike it then report back.

The old Roaring Fork Shelter (built by the Hiking Mountain Mommas) used to be .5 S of Lemon Gap (5 miles N of Max Patch). It was getting a lot of weekend use and trashed all the time. So, a new shelter was built (2004 or 2005?) further away from the road access. Im not sure the exact distance to the new shelter, but I believe it is somewhere between 2 - 2.5 miles from Max Patch.

There is still an old shelter near the summit of Walnut Mountain. The shelter is very small. I think it sleeps 4 or 6 people. Ive never stayed there, just walked by it several times.
