I strongly and heartily invite folks to attend a very laid back opportunity to meet other hikers, wannabes, friends and relatives. Camp Thornwell is a religious and charitable institution that consistently forbids alcohol and drug use, so don't even start there. We have no board of directors, elections or great expenses. This is basically a good relaxed weekend in the middle of winter.

Most of all, it is fun.

Hmmm. No alcohol? How on earth can hikers have a "gathering" without drinking? Doesn't it divide everyone? Must be alcohol is not a priority in the lives of hikers attending this ruck. Cool. Maybe I'll come.

Last year I hiked the 76-mile Foothills Trail and came off the trail after day #2 to attend the RUCK. The trail actually comes within 1 mile of Camp Thornwell. For those who don't mind hiking in winter, a combination of hiking the Foothills Trail and the SORUCK is a pretty good one - IMO.

Here's a link to my journal with oodles of photos.

Just remember that this is Robert E. Lee Weekend also. His birthday January 19 is a holiday in most Southern states.

Prior versions of the SORUCK were held at Goose Creek Cabins and Amicolola Falls State Park. Alcohol was there. Problems weren't. Police action involved parking and apprehension that hammocks would harm trees.

Thus far, I've seen no examples of vivisection (dividing hikers) in connection to following our hosts' rules on alcohol or other issues. "When in Rome...."

Yes, many Southern States give state employees a vacation day for either REL or MLK's birthday on that Monday. Given that many of the SORUCKers are damnedyankees, I haven't seen anything to suggest a problem for anyone to celebrate however/whomever they wish.

BTW, last year I shuttled Youngblood and Little Bear back to the Foothills Trail. It was awfully hard not to join them.
