Are there tent sites by the Cherry Gap shelter? Since the weather calls for rain Friday night, the shelter sleeps only 6, and the shelter is only 15 miles from Erwin (logical stopping point for someone NOBO), I figure I better prepare for it being full.

There were no demarcated tent sites that I recall, but there certainly appeared to be enough space to setup 3 tents.

Cherry gap probably won't be too full. With most of the crowd already gone through.

Cherry gap has a fairly large flat area in front of the shelter. Which has the best water source on the north side of Unaka. Then there is Low Gap to the south. With a spring down on the TN side nearing a forest road.

If its not calling for lightning, there is the the evergreen forest at the summit of Unaka, Deep Gap, and Beauty Spot.

I've camped at Cherry Gap with a small group. We didn't have any trouble finding five or six tent sites.

Scratch Beech ... make it Ash Gap (right before going up Roan).

I know ... what an ash hole.

Ash Gap looked like it would be a nice place to camp.

Very peaceful ... nice spring ... high altitude but not exposed.

Thanks for the replies. We went SOBO from Hughes Gap 12miles to Cherry Gap Shelter finding 2 thru-hikers lounging there @ 3:30 pm. But they soon moved on, and we claimed spots inside. But by the time it was dark there were a dozen thru hikres there. 2 claimed spots with us and the rest tented close by.

Rain never appeared except for showers around noon both Friday and Sat when we were on the trail.
