Does Dahlgren have a camp store, and a restaurant/grill? I remember reading it does but would like to confirm. How are the prices? Thanks!

Abut a quarter of a mile up the road to the left is the Old South Mountain Inn.
The absolute best meal you can have along the AT.
Be sure to take a shower at the Dahlgren Campsite and put on your cleanest clothes.

PS...Take your camera with you. Camp David is right next door, so who knows who you might see there.

Ummm.....not exactly. Camp David is part of Catoctin Mountain Park, waaay north of South Mountain, up Hwy 15 near Thurmont MD. Catoctin Mt Park has to periodically shut down parts of the park because of Camp David being in use. I just led a hike up there two weeks ago and had to keep an eye on their website to make sure our trail would still be open. I live in Frederick MD and we used to be able to drive very close to the Camp until 9/11. Just scan the hilltops northwest of Frederick and you'll see the forest of antennas........

Exactly. And Dahlgren (South Mt) is way down there off of Alt Hwy 40 just south of where it says "Washington Monument State Park." They are not by any stretch "next" to each other if you're staying at one or the other. Unless you have a really spectacular telescope with a high-powered zoom-lens equipped camera........

Just for clarification on the location of the South Mountain Inn. Heading NB on the trail the inn will be on your left before crossing US 40 ALT. There is AT parking in the lot. You can't miss it. If you don't want to go to fancy place like SM Inn go about a mile west on US 40 ALT to Boonsboro. Lots of places to eat there too.

Old South Mtn Inn

This place has been a restaurant since the 1700s, The Mountain House is older than America, and was in business before the American Revolution.

We celebrated an anniversary there several years ago. Gorgeous place and outstanding food. Sat in that windowed atrium area. We've been looking for a place to go for our upcoming 35th anniversary - -thanks for the reminder! I think we'll go there!

OK, maybe I should have said "in the vicinity" instead of "right next door".
But if you are driving, 15 miles is pretty much "right next door".

Take your camera for a photo of the shrimp cocktail, they were the size of small bananas.
