While on a 8 day section hike last week my gore-tex Lowa boots that never gave me a blister started to leak in the rain. They got wet inside and stayed wet for 2 days. I decided to retire them in favor of a new pair that I have had waiting in my closet for over a year.
Good bye to my good and loyal boots... :(
from now on I will probably use them for shoveling snow or things like that.

How many miles on them?
I generally don't throw out a pair of my favorite hiking shoes until they fall apart.
But that's me.
I used to get my shoes from a runner who considered them worn out at 400 miles.
I considered them just getting broken in.
Wet feet when it rains? I thought that was a given.

hold on a second... It occurs to me that if they are buried/cremated, it becomes exceedingly hard to shovel snow in them...

I still have my custom Limmers - Haven't worn them for 8 years, but they're still in the alcove at the top of the stairs. I can't bear to let them go [sniff] :(.
I find that getting new sneakers has the same problem, but usually my girlfriends start nagging me to upgrade to new ones once the looks start to go. I still keep the old ones for anyway as backups.

You're describing my library. The extra space on the shelves is the final resting place for most of my old gear. I've been asked about my "odd collection"; folks just blink when I tell them I got it all new. :)
