I'm sectioning Hanover to N. Woodstock, NH next week. I want to go up Moosilauke, but I'm not sure I want to do the steep downhill on the AT to Kinsman Notch (I've done this before). Is there an alternate route down Moosilauke that would be easier and/or especially scenic? I don't have a problem with a trail that comes out at Ravine Lodge or along 118 as long as I can hitch into N. Woodstock.

I did it SOBO with a shuttle out of Glencliff - much easier.

It has to be NOBO for me, partly because that's just how I'm doing the AT, and partly because I have a wedding to go to in Lincoln, so I'm basically hiking to the wedding.

Yes, there are trails from the summit to Ravine Lodge. Get a map. But, probably the steepest trail around is the Beaver Brook Trail that you are trying to avoid.

When I hiked Moosilauke I took the Asquam Ridge Trail. It leaves the Beaver Brook trail not too far after the summit and leads back to the Ravine Lodge. It was a very easy, quiet, scenic trail that was very enjoyable to hike.

But you said you've already done it that direction before, so why do it again NOBO?

Take the Gorge ravine/Snapper trail down to the Ravine lodge. It is very scenic.

Thanks for the tips, everyone. I'll see what the weather and my knees feel like once I get up there--report to follow.
