This coming saturday on the 12th of June at around 1330 there will be a gathering of this years thru- hikers to watch the clash of our two great nations in the greatest spectacle on this planet we call Earth, the World Cup.

We will be watching this game at the Doyle Hotel in Duncannon (where else). I'm hoping to have a pumping atmosphere going so it would be great to have as many people as physically possible there. Even if football isn't your cup of tea, it should be a good laugh.

If you live close by then please do come along!

Darn, that should be a great time! I'm rooting for the USA in this one, but I won't be overly disappointed if they lose as long as they play well. Given the recent performance of their defense, I'll be amazed if they can keep Rooney at bay without leaving someone else unmarked.

Go Slovakia! (I figure I only have a few weeks to say that.)

Would love to join you but I have something more exciting than soccer to watch that afternoon. With all the rain we are getting today, I am pretty sure the grass in my lawn will be growing on Saturday.

Sorry I won't be there. Watching hikers try and convince the locals that they want to watch soccer for four hours should be as entertaining as the the game itself. :D

90 minutes, to be precise, JT. Plus stoppage. But mow your lawns. Leave the good stuff for us.

Old joke.

Q. Why does everybody in Europe play soccer?

A. Because if you don't play you have to watch.

soccer? who watches that? :-?Better workout that joggin' for 50 miles.

Okay, maybe not quite as many calories, but you won't get injured.

Well, maybe not get injured, but at least by playing you can appreciate the level these guys play at.

I'd be there with you in Duncannon if I could Tin tin.
But, the next best thing is, I'm going to a mostly English bar here in Phuket, Thailand that has a big screen and I know most of the punters there.

It is my belief that the ones who are badmouthing the game are showing their age and the next generation (20-30 year olds) are much more into the most popular game in the world.
(they'd rather watch Nascar for ****s sake)

Nah, we're badmouthing the game because it is an easy target.

Some very unoriginal responses as to why not to watch the football, though I've come to expect that from you folk this side of the pond ;) Perhaps you should come down here and learn a thing about wit as well as the most popular sport in the world (remember, there is a world outside the US). Think I've done enough stirring for now (taken a leaf out of your book Lone Wolf!).

We expect to break the record for most hikers in the Doyle this saturday and as I've written in many shelter journal, it's not just about the game. Football unites people throughout the world and it looks like they'll be a big gathering on saturday.

In the Duncannon now and they're excited about it. I think they win the best wings, best burger, best fries and best pint award so far on the trail.

I won't be watching the game because I'm going to be backpacking in the Cascades all weekend.

That's the plan, anyway.

Fries? I thought they were chips. Are you sure that's not going to be Soccer on Satuday?
