Just wondering from thru hikers how many zeroes you had during your first four weeks of the hike? Count neroes too if you don't mind, say 2-3 miles tops.

I took a nearo in Franklin and a zero at Damascus. I mainly just walked because it was excellent walking.

Hiking the PCT I took 5 or 6 zeros during the first month. Some for a snow storm.

2 off days and several very short days (4 miles or less). However, most of those short days were the most brutal hiking I had on the trail due to the weather in GA and NC. I did 16 miles in 4 consecutive days, and three of those days severely tested my limits.
It's not the mileage, it's not the place, it's not how you or your companions- it's the combination that makes each day unique for each backpacker.

Normally, in the first month, i take about 2-3.
Each year was different.
Depends on: injury's, sporting events going on that are "must see", hiking partners injury's, my own well being (am I having fun or do i need to go get cleaned up), weather, availability of rides, opportunity, work related issues (do i have to take a day off to take care of business)
I think these are all things you cannot predict. (or plan)
Just go with the flow and take a day off when you need to. (or want to)

Most wolves run in a pack and nip at you until you weaken then go in for the kill. Pack wolves are kind of cowardly, IMO.

You don't work 7 days a week...why not take a day off once a week? :) Watch cartoons (if available), eat...eat more and have some fun...then nap! Repeat as necessary.

I would think that it depends on a lot of things. What kind of shape you are in, how old you are and what kind of weather you are having.
If you are not in the sub 40 group and in good shape you should think about taking a "0" every 5-7 days just to rest up a bit. After you are in "trail shape" you will be fine not taking any unless you have to.
Listen to your body. It will tell you when you need to take a "0" day.:-?
