Fishing permit

I apologize in advance if this question has already come up but.... is a fishing permit something that can be obtained the same day we arrive? Or is it something that needs to be planned in advance? Thanks

Ok, so I went past the first page of forums and found the answer to my question. It seems Yosemite Valley and/or T Meadows will provide me with a 10 day fishing permit.
