View Full Version : Safe Parking at Allen Gap / Parking at Sams Gap
I am planning a couple day hike in the area. Is there and safe parking near Allen Gap where the AT intersects with NCHWY 208? I did not see any noted on my map or trail book. How safe is the parking lot on I-26 at Sams Gap? Thanks, I plan to go this weekend.

Not sure of the answers to your questions, but this site helps me a lot with those types of planning. Appalachian Trail Parking. (http://rohland.homedns.org/at/at_menu.aspx) Sam's Gap has a parking area, and others here have said it's pretty safe. Allen Gap seems to be a road crossing without parking. Not sure I'd trust that.
What I especially like about that site is that they use the photographs built into Google Maps to allow you to actually see the crossing! Pretty cool.

Allen Gap is a little iffy, but Sam's Gap should be ok.
About 1/2 mile off the AT at Allens gap is a hostel called hemlock hollow. You can park there for a small fee. www.hemlockhollow.net

According to their sign, they are ".06" off the trail. I was wooed by the promise of ice cream and cold beverages. The walk sucked.
