It doesn't mention anything about auto renewal. You can use a credit card that has an expiration date in the next few months so it wouldn't be any good a year from now. Or, pay by Paypal. They can't charge it to your Paypal account again later on unless you set up a recurring payment through Paypal.
Also, I read on their site that new offers go up a 7am daily. So this offer might not be there tomorrow.

Still working........hard to beat seven bucks for two years. Too bad that the magazine has gone downhill over the last decade. I've still got a few of the issues from the 80's and it was a quality read then ,with good unbiased reviews and maybe a 1/10 of the advertising........

I will sign up as well. I am a huge fan of Lunchbox the Cadaver dog.
Great price for kindling.
There's other stuff that's lighter and holds a flame better :D.
I cancelled my subscription just before I became a member here because they made the DUMB decision to advertise ATVs in their rag. That, plus most of the places they write about west of the Mississippi I will probably never experience outside of pics on the internet, and they're always a few steps behind on reporting on cutting edge gear, mainly because the makers of said gear are usually little risk taking enterprises with little capital to invest on advertising (maybe in Backpacker??.....;)). It used to be a decent mag for folks wanting basic, durable gear from big companies, though.
Just for the sake of keeping them in print I would personally like to thank those of you who paid for a subscription. :)
I, personally, would rather pay more for an online sub. at www.backpackinglight.com (http://www.backpackinglight.com) .
johnnybgood

I too cancelled my subscription after 2 years for reasons mentioned by Tinker , but like many here I will support their mag , except I'm not paying $7 for kindling . My 1 year renewal is typical of what I would descibe as a love/hate relationship that swings much like a pendulum in either direction.
Their best work IMO is the real people who test market gear and make honest unbiased opinions . Too , the 'HIDDEN GEMS' , hikes that are the best of a particular region of the country , are interesting with perforrated pocket sized tear outs .
Come a year after the first copy that crosses my fingertips I'll either be back in their camp wishing that I re-uped for 2 years , or Backpacker the magizine will be adorning the front lobby of my workplace as an unopened ,freshly packaged read for people waiting with nothing better to do than pass the time .... :)
Sweet deal. That's just about what the magazine is worth IMO.
The ads are generally useless.
Some of the articles are interesting. I like reading about hikes in other regions.
There's usually some very good photographs.

real good price, but why do you have to wait 10 to 14 weeks for first issue?

The wait is because this great deal subscriptions are being sold through a magazine wholesaler. They have to hit a cerain number of subscriptions before sending on for normal processing. FWIW, I have had great luck w/most orders through wholesalers in the past, but not all (including one for backpacker).

I think everyone should subscribe to this magazine. It's just about the only mag dedicated to backpacking. Yes they make LOTS of compromises but people need to realize the difficulty of catering to such a niche market.
If everyone with some backpacking experience cancels and trash talks them the moment they outgrow such magazines, you'll not have anything catering to the niche markets.
Face it, even with the stupid ads and the sometimes ridiculous articles, this is still a niche magazine. 99.9% of the population would find it strange that it even exists.
99% of the population probably finds the idea of sleeping in the woods bizarre. Camping means car camping to most people.
With all that in mind and comparing $14/year to the cost of your gear purchases, do be considerate to a niche magazine like this at a time when far bigger ones are going under.
I think it's worth $14 / year just for the pics and reminders about various trails around the country.

Do you think there is a chance that we won't get the magazine?
Rocket Jones
07-28-2010, 06:21
I think someone earlier in the thread pegged it: we signed up with a subscription wholesaler, and they wait until they get a set number of subs before submitting them all at once.
It's a win for everyone. The wholesaler makes a bit on each subscription, the magazine boasts higher readership numbers and can charge more for advertising space, and we get a magazine for a very good price. The downside is we have to wait longer for the first issue than if you had subscribed directly at the regular price.

of course. anything done over the internet, especially through a third party, can be bogus. that's common sense...
I ordered Guitar Player magazine from a similar wholesaler (maybe the same one) a couple years ago, and it took a couple months to see the first issue, but it did arrive. Just takes some time.
That was a great find. Thanks!:banana

Just click the green "shop now!" button on the dealnews page, and it'll take you to the page with outside magazine. This page gives you the option to "buy now" for $18. You click that, then enter the coupon code "OUTSIDE" where it asks for coupon codes and the price comes down to $3 per year.

A much better-written coverage of all sorts of outdoor-recreation pursuits, in my opinion, including some very well-conducted interviews and articles about interesting people. I like the pretty pictures in backpacker, but it ends up being the same info rehashed again and again... Outside tends to contain a lot more food for though. Just my opinion anyhow.

Anybody read the newest Backpacker? The Senior editor said "The green tunnel is for hippies and post-grads" that like to be able to order pizza from a trailside hut to share with their new buddies grasshopper pie... For a real adventure Shannon Davis reccommends the CDT.
Danielsen
10-05-2010, 15:20
While the CDT certainly is an adventure, no doubt, these sound like over-generalizations not too far from the ones in the "how much money do you make" thread.
Fact: a wide variety of people with different backgrounds, ages, and motives hike the AT every year. I think that's about as definitive as one can get.
Long live the AT! (and CDT, and PCT, and NCT, and LT, and BMT, and IAT, and FLT, and...)

I usually stay away from the "Let's slam Backpacker!!" threads as I think they get a bit excessive, but Luddite brought up something important:
The recent November 2010 issue contains a lengthy (and beautifully photographed) piece on the magazine's "20 all-time favorite trips".
The A.T. is cited, but in the body of the article, the Trail and those who hike it are savagely and childishly criticized by Senior Editor Shannon Davis.
And on the issue's masthead, there's a place where most of their senior employees and contributors can comment on these top 20 hikes; there's a place where these folks can add a great hike that they think deserves a spot on the list, and moreover, they can list trails they'd like to see dropped from the list altogether.
Among the folks who evidently hold such a low opinion of the A.T. are the magazine's Editor-in-Chief Jonathan Dorn; longtime contributing editor Jim Gorman; Eastern Sales Manager Candice Boyd, Advertising Manager J. J. Schumacher, and Special Projects Director Alison Kennedy.
All of these folks would happily cut the A.T. from the top 20 list.
There are also folks like Shannon Davis (again!) who would drop the Long Trail from this list, but then, so would loong-time Gear Editor Kristen Hostetter.
Long time readers of the magazine have certainly been aware of Backpacker's disdain and flippant attitude towards backpacking in the East, but it is unusual to see so many of their senior staff flat-out admit that these sentiments are so widely held by such senior people.
Oh, and lastly, in the same issue Backpacker went and named Grassy Ridge Bald in the Roan Highlands as one of the best campsites in the whole country, thus ensuring that this beautiful and reasonably secluded spot will be over-run in years to come. So what we see is a magazine that dumps on a Trail that millions of people love, but at the same time, it makes sure and helps "discover" one of that Trail's greatest locations!
Thanks guys, great work!! Can't imagine why some people have a beef with you guys!
Last one I read was a few years ago - I learned more about the MPG of offroad vehicles, and after more ads than info, I've chosen to to bother with it again.

It may be at one of your local libraries. My library has a pretty extensive selection. I always just check them out occasionally since I don't really like many of the magazines nowadays. I use to have subscriptions to various mags, including Bicycling Magazine (which for a time was printed by the same company as BP, not sure if they still are).
