I summited Katahdin this morning at 8:45 AM. Weather was picture perfect and the climb was a perfect end to a long journey.

I'm currenly in Millinocket at the Appalachian Trail Lodge waiting on my family to arrive tomorrow afternoon for the return home.

FWIW, the 100 mile wilderness isn't as wild as I expected.... I had a 1 lb burger at Whitehouse Landing about halfway through, I camped one night about 100 feet from Jo Mary road and heard cars drive by off and on all night and when I crossed one gravel road a Lexus drove by leaving me in a cloud of dust.

Quick report:

800 miles in 40 days
3 zeros
3 days with less than 10 miles
spent $1800 ($300 on gear, $1500 on town/supply/meals)
Hitched 5 times
Longest wait on a hitch: 15 minutes

Best hostel: Appalachian Trail Lodge, Milinocket
Best hotel stay: Hanover Inn, Hanover, NH
Best meal: Breakfast at Shaws.

Toughest climb: Pinkham Notch in the rain
Best day: Hiking over Franconia Ridge
Worst day: The day I hiked out of Madison Spring hut in the rain.
Best views: Franconia Ridge

Something I took I didn't use: headnet

Worst day: The day I hiked out of Madison Spring hut in the rain.

I can understand that. Going down from Madison to Pinkham almost shattered my knees in my thru last year.

Whoopie pies (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whoopie_pie) were discovered long ago in the Pennsylvania Dutch Country the same day as Shoo-fly pie. Hikers in a hurry who fail to venture off the beaten path fail to discover many things.

The homemade Whoopie Pies at Whitehouse Landing were as big as a saucer and a good 2" thick or more.... Probably had 1500 calories a pie.

I, of course, had 2 with my 1 lb burger. :)

Clearly, you get it! It was my pleasure to provide you with information and learn of your progress. Congratulations on your achievements. Now, if only AMC would begin serving whoopie pies at their huts.:welcome

Not upscale enough. Would be like having a fluffernutter on the menu.

Good shot of the legs. Bet that skin got tight and itched like a beast.
