Can anyone ID what kind of snake this is?
I have named him Adam and we had a nice long conversation.
...Oh! Just for the record, I'm not crazy!
I prefer the term eccentric!

I know Adam isn't poisonous due to the shape of his head and by looking at his eyes.

Judging from the picture, it looks like a Black Ratsnake, Elaphe oboleta obsoleta. But the pic is a little smal. I cant really get a good pic of it. Can you send a better pic??

Meant to add, judging by the blue in the eyes, it is in the blue, which happens just before shedding. The reason the "blue" color is so stricking. Most snakes actually look sick in this state, but Black Ratsnakes can really stand out..

I've seen Copperheads up close and personal. Seven years ago this month my wife was bitten by one while we were walking in a local park.

Never saw it until she screamed and I looked down and this 3 foot long Copperhead is slithering away inches from my sandals.

Jest of this story is:

You're bound to see a venomous snake when you least expect it.

How Painful was her bite and how long for her to heal? Did she need anti-venom?

I hiked it a few weeks back. I don't remember seeing so much as a squirrel. The snake in the picture I took was found on the Bear Hair Gap trail at Vogel.

Omega Man has some good questions!
Also, how big was the copperhead?

My wife was in the Intensive Care Unit for 4 days so they could monitor her blood pressure . The anti-venom caused her blood pressure to drop like a rock.
The ER doctor waited for 4 hours after arrival before giving the first dose of 5 vials.
They kept watch as the swelling advanced up the leg to just below her knee. When it was obvious that there would be irreversable tissue damaged they gave an additional 5 vials of anti-venom.
The snake was my a good 3 feet long which is about the max. for the northern copperhead
She said the bite felt like a twig snapping forward across her ankle . Of course then the swelling and excruciating pain followed.

I saw at least a dozen of those black rat snakes last year on our hike. Even saw one laying eggs.

Yes, this is on a bridge on the Virginia Creeper Trail where it runs with the AT for a while.

There were 10 snakes on this bridge alone. All were on the outside of the rails sunning themselves. Some stretched out where you could see their length. Longest one was over 6 feet.

My daughter Grass found that snakes kept mice out of shelters AND they didn't want her food (as dogs do), so she was very cool with AT snakes.

I'm sad to report that there is one less snake at Bake Oven Knob Shelter. I was getting water at the next shelter north (George Outerbank, I think.), when I ran into some jerkwad bragging about killing the snake.

I had looked for the snake, but didn't see it, just wish it had stayed hidden for a while longer.

Absolutely. I keep my eyes peeled for snakes, and thought I would never see a venemous snake until last May. A few weeks into my hike I still had not seen one and stopped even thinking about the possibility. Well one warm spring day I came around a bend in the trail and came about a foot away from stepping on a Copperhead. It was sunning itself in the trail and I must have startled it because it coiled up and struck out at me and then slithered quickly away. Scary moment.

Just wait! He will be the next one to get bitten!
And when that happens we can all nudge each other and giggle!

Ditto Rain Man. A harmless to us and a helpful snake to eradicate pests.
I get so frustrated with "outdoor" people that do not educate themselves about snakes and kill any one they see.
I hope the snake killer has mice in his pants.
