Anyone out there have a knowledgeable guess as to when the water pump freezes up at Silver Hill Camp in Connecticut?

I was there this past weekend and the pump was not working at all. The temp was 15 F at night so that does not help. The register at the site had numerous posts of the pump not working in the summer or only trickling rusty water after many minutes of hard pumping. Guinea Brook one mile north on the other side of CT RTE 4 is a good river to grab water before getting into camp or leaving the next morning.

Evidence would seem to show the old pump has outlived its usefulness. I was there in late March and there was no water to be had. I figured it was still frozen. We had to move on to the next campsite to the north as we had not refilled our bottles before climbing the hill from the south. Should have been plenty of cold fresh water over the summer.

Thank you for the information!

As an aside, I agree that it's a wonderful site, especially in summer. A healthy pump is certainly one of the attractions. The view and the swing are great. It's almost too civilized!

The swing is broken down on the north side & no longer swings. It still makes a nice seat. This is as of 12/4/04.

I remember when it was a great cabin, wonder if the pump still works- above freezing?

I took a break there last week and the register said that the water coming from the pump is rusty and AWFUL tasting. Other than that it looks to be a beautiful place to camp.

You'd do better to pack in your own from the stream near the shelter a few miles S of the campsite. Use that rusty junk for washing dishes, if at all.

I stayed there on 9/11/2001. That's where I heard about the attack.

I was there Yesterday, Friday June 17, 2005 and I could not get any water out of the pump. It is dry.

I was there last year, it took me three two minute sessions of pumping to get water. That was a workout, time moves slowly when you're pumping. The water was rusty but I was grateful for it anyway. This was in late August or early September. I thought at the time it might be a priming issue, but maybe I'm wrong.

Fear Not! The swing is swinging again - I swung on it yesterday. Weeeee! Now that is good news. :D It's the little things that make me happy when I'm hiking.. And I dig that section in CT, so I tend to hike it fairly often.

Yes, the swing was in great shape when we came through on June 6, 2005. It would be great to say the same for the pump, but at least so far as we could tell, it was bone dry.
