There is a pleasure in the pathless woods.
There is a rature on t he lonely shore.
There is a society, where nonoe intrudes.
By the deep sea and music in it's roar.
I love not man less, but nature more.

Well you can drop your worries at the parking lot
Or way down in the city where the sun burns hot.
Although civilization is a nice place to visit,
I wouldn't want to live there.

Author unknown, but attributed to the German Landschneckts (Mercenaries) from the 14th & 15th centuries. As a rule, they carried 20' long "Pikes" or pole arms (think "Spears") but were good with nearly any weapon. They dressed VERY colorfully for the time period.
And, like us, they traveled with all their worldly goods very much of the time.
Notice also that it is my signature line. :D

I'm pretty sure Hunter S. Thompson said it first...

Some of my favorites, sorry, I don't know most of the authors:
"Things have a way of working out, despite our best efforts."
"The journey, not the destination, becomes a source of wonder. In the end, one of the most important steps on our journey is the one in which we throw away the map. In jettisoning the grids & brambles of our own pre-conceptions, perhaps we are better able to find the real secrets of each place."
"Earth gives life & seeks the man who walks gently upon it."
"What lies before you & what lies behind you pales insignificant when compared to what lies within you. 20 years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do, than by the ones you did do. Throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover."
"Quando Omni Flunkus Moritati: When all else fails, play dead!" Steven Smith aka: Red Green
"You could get mauled by a bear & Die. You could get bit by a snake & Die. You could fall off a cliff & Die. You could get struck by lightning & Die. Or, you could stay home, sit on the couch, eat potato chips, & Die."
"Everywhere is walking distance, if you have the time."

From my then 11 year old:
"Dad, why is it that when a woman can't hear a man, he's mumbling, and when a man can't hear a woman, he's not paying attention?"
My wife was not amused. I later pulled the boy aside and explained to him about the value of discretion and knowing one's audience.

"Follow your heart in lieu of the crowd,
Your soul will speak clearer, and ever so loud."
I found this on Llano's 2010 AT journal. I thought it fitting for here because it inspired so many memories for me:
"The morning brings a symphony of sounds. As the sky begins to lighten you here the gentle twittering of the birds in the trees. Then the soft "shush" of nylon as the first hiker begins to stir. Soon more shushing of nylon as another & then another hiker wakes. Soon the zzzzzzttttt of a zipper as someone emerges from their nightly cocoon. The whoooosh of air as it is expelled from air mattresses joins the other sounds. Soon the jangle of bear cables as food bags are lowered, followed by the thud & thump of food bags being set down. Next the roar of a Jet Boil & the clinking of plastic spoons against metal pots join the cacophony of noise. Underneath all these sounds, which build one on another as yet another hiker rises, is the sound of people talking, first quiet whispers which slowly rise in volume as more people join in the morning preparations. As the last hiker is up the volume & intensity reaches a climax. Next the click, click of backpacks being closed. Then gentle grunts & groans are emitted as hikers hoist their packs onto backs, soon followed by the snap of a waist belt buckle. Farewells & parting messages are exchanged & the click clack sound of hiking poles are heard as they fade away into the distance. Slowly the noise in the shelter falls as first one, then the next, & each subsequent hiker leaves to begin their daily trek until at last there is only the sound of the leaves in the breeze & the twittering of the birds in the trees." Llano
Sigh, I got to get back on the trail,,, ANY trail!!
