I've been thinking about hiking the trail for a long time. I've just retired from teaching this year and if I am going to hike the trail the time is now. However, I am looking for someone to hike it with me. Does anyone know where I can look to find a partner or if you are interested in hiking it with me, send me a post. :welcome

what part of the trail and where? I'll be leaving by Saturday for Dennytown road crossing in NY and going NOBO; been off the trail due to a leg injury.

Here's an interesting article on finding a trail partner.

That is the toughest thing for me out west, finding hiking partners who are reliable. They always cancel at the last minute, night before the hike. I have met some pretty cool people while hiking, though, and we trade numbers for future hikes.

Other than rest from a messed up left leg I'm ready to go; but as others say, "alot of the time they wimp out the last minute." Hiking partners, and trust, is hard to find. I have to leave solo again Saturday. Though, remember, you will always run into hikers out there. Eventually you run into someone the same speed as you and tag together for a few weeks, more or less. That is something I look forward to; solitary but company at the end of the day.

I guess I wasn't specific enough...I want to hike in the spring...the whole thing. I don't care if I go north to south or south to north...

If you can't find a hiking partner for a thru-hike in advance, you almost certainly can find one (or more) once you are on the trail. It happens all the time. Plenty of hiking memoirs (including those by women) relate this phenomenon. Happened to my own daughter. Best to you.

Hi Mistie,

I too am hoping to find someone to thru hike with. I am a 37 y/o female nature photographer. I have hiked about 1/4 of the trail already; mostly alone. I hike regularly during the summer and am in pretty decent shape. Next week I will finally get to introduce my 14 y/o daughter to a section hike in Grayson Highlands. The thought of seeing the ponies and getting a good workout appealed to her. I live in Florida so it is next to impossibe to find good hiking partners. My husband doesn't hike. I am vegetarian, so will have to plan mail drops when I get home in the fall. Feel free to contact me.

This is what we saw in June from Grayson Highlands park to Elk Garden. That is one of my partners there were about 12 ponies in the area.

Thanks for the pic,

I was there right before trail days and got some really nice pony pictures with my sister. Some of them are posted under my pictures on trail journals. We saw 16 including 3 foals. It will be intresting to see how much the little guys have grown.

You made a comment about being a vegetarian. I estimate about 90% of my calories come from non-meat sources, so I'm really not a strict vegetarian. But, for the AT, it just makes sense to stick with high energy vegetarian options. What foods do you typically pack?
