I'm looking to start my southbound hike in early august, if not the end of July. I was wondering if there were any others out there starting the trail and if anyone would join with me. Is is too late to start the hike in the year though if I'm starting in very early August?

No. You have plenty of time to get through the White's before winter weather, after that no concerns.
