View Full Version : How much of the AT have you hiked so far?

I'm curious how much experience or milage all the 2011 Thru-Hikers have on the AT? Are you a current section hiker or a repeat Thru-Hiker? I have about 300 miles of the AT under my belt mostly in the mid atlantic section and southern New England. I've also done some hiking in the Whites and Mahoosucs, and an overnight in the Grayson Highlands. I can't wait to hike in the southern appalachians and the rest of New England. So, where have you hiked on the AT and what section are looking forward to?

Im not a 2011 hiker, but when we first thru-hiked the trail I had already hiked Ga-Mt Rogers in sections over a period of 5-6 years.

Roughly 1000 miles give or take a few on the AT....then again I don't think of myself as a average 11' hiker.

I've done about 600 miles so far in mostly 30-50 mile sections in various states. I think it has given me a good feel for what it is like. The biggest difference will be not having the weekends to recuperate from my weekday summer hiking. There are many great sections but Katahdin is in my oppinion, the best. I am also completing my 46er list in the Adirondacks this summer. A typical day there tends to be a little more intense.
I've done not more than 20 miles, probably less, more than 25 years ago, in Boy Scouts and with my family. I only lived on the east coast for a few years when I was a kid, was born in California, and we came back here when I started high school. So the AT is not exactly convenient for short trips.
But I remember my dad telling me that it ran from Georgia to Maine the first time we went out on it, and me thinking how awesome that was. I don't know if he knew he was planting a seed that day, but he did.

One thing about a thru hike that most folks don't get. This hike is a process....a grind like a job! You get up early...hike...camp...sleep...then repeat in the rain, snow, hot, cold. Remember that as such you need to take days off (called Zeros..no miles hiked) to resupply, relax, recuperate, etc.. A day or two here and there helps mentally and physically. I saw way too many hikers burn out because they think they need tons of miles a week. Smell the roses and enjoy the hike...your miles accumulate faster than you think. Remember its a process not a marathon.
Assuming the mileage didn't change over the past 12 years, I've hiked just over 534 miles so far. Plus about 20 miles of a 30 mile hike in SNP, but I did a lot of yellow blazing (therefore the 10 mile "gap") due to a bad case of Flu, so I'm not really counting them.

Right now I have about 50 miles on the AT so far. Doing all of WV (wow!) and MD in September and all of Georgia in October. By the time April of next year rolls around, I should have about 225 miles or so.

my wife and I, 2011 hikers, have already done nearly all of SNP, not sure of the mileage here. We've also done Harpers ferry North 10 miles or so, and a good section of the Greyson highlands. Roan to Uncle Johnny's and that is it.

I have 118 miles under my belt with 78 of them on the at and about 10-20 miles added each month as I have been lucky enough to get in one shakedown hike a month so far.

I hiked from GA to WV back in 1991. I ran out of money & returned home to make enough to finish the rest. Well, I fell in love, settled down, and that was that.
At 42, I'm single again & hitting the AT next summer to complete the journey.:banana I'll be starting in Harper's Ferry.
I'm going to time my start date to put myself right in the thick of the class of 2011. I hope y'all will include me in the group. I've been dreaming of this for almost 20 years. :)
not sure of the miles but most of the skyline drive section in virginia, a section near harper's ferry, max patch, mt. roan, and mt. rogers. doing the SOBO in june 2011 is JUST about on my mind every day. :)
I'm not keeping track of miles, just sections. So far I've done from Katahdin to the Pa./NJ line, Georgia, and a bit of the Shennies.
I'm planning on a thru hike in 2011. So far I've hiked from Waynesboro, VA to Dalton, MA in several 100+ mile hikes.

About 150 miles. That includes all of Maryland and West Virginia plus most of SNP.
All of MD, All of MA parts of VT, VA and PA. Will be leaving April 1, 2011 for a thru-hike.

Summer of 09 me and a friend hiked from north Adams mass. To fort royal VA in one trip around 500 miles. I've also section hiked grafton noch Maine many times ( about 30miles)

My very first backpacking trip was with my dad in 1983 around Bear Mountain, in New York. I hiked a piece of the Smokies in 1995. I hiked a piece of the AT in New jersey in 2006.

DH and I have hiked from Newfound Gap to Icewater Spring Shelter.
So only about 3-4 miles. :)
About 12 miles so far in the CT and MA Taconics. Adding more whenever possible!

About 800 miles from Waynesboro, VA to Dalton, MA, some sections twice. Heading out next week to do Pen Mar to Front Royal.

1996 started out in Vermont and hiked to Maine, then turned around and ended the hike in a snow storm in Waynesboro, Va. This was my first time long distance hike. Other hikers tought me how to live on the trail.
!997 started in Ga and finnished in Vermont and New Hampshire somewhere
2000 started in Carlisle, Pa and finnished just inside of Canada
2005 Ga to Maine
Other hikes: PCT, Lost Coast Trail, Long Trail

So far my wife and I have hiked the trail between Harper's Ferry, WV and Crawford Notch, NH. Thats a little over 800 miles. We're working our way north 1 to 2 weeks at a time. Once we finish the northern half we hope to do the southern half as one journey.
Did a 60 mi. in 08', an 85 mi. in 09'. Am a PATC member and an A.T. trail overseer and maintain a 3 mile section in southern PA. Fun to chat with the thru / section hikers as I'm working on the trail. Decided to experience the journey myself after I retire in 2011.

I've hiked from Springer mountain to NOC a couple of times and hiked through the Smokies twice in Winter. Not much experience on the AT yet.

Around 470 miles, all south of Pen Mar park (MD/PA line), mostly in Virginia.

I suppose for a thru-hiker this would be kind of anticlimactic.
Am up to about 1% of the AT. Lion's Head trail junction, CT, north to Elbow Trail junction, MA. Jones Nose Trail Junction at Saddleball Mtn summit, MA, north past Mt. Williams - side trail to Notch Road Parking Area. Kelly Stand Road, VT, to Stratton Mountain fire tower. About 21 miles total. Add in duplications - repeat trips and there-and-backs - and I'm up to about 33 miles of AT hiking total. Drop in the bucket!
I just finished the last little section that connected everything from the Priest to roughly the NJ-NY state line. In that, I've also done SNP-AT 3 times and multiple repeats in PA because that's where I live and it's easily accessible. I started hiking in 1978, so at this rate I should finish the whole thing about 30 years after I'm dead.
I've completed just about 500 miles, all of Maryland, W. Virginia, New Jersey & Maine and sections of the other states north of Virginia.
I used to have a goal of thru hiking in 2010 (for my 50th birthday) but got over that and enjoy section hiking moreso. If I do get a chance to thru hike it will be when the opportunity arises, not for some silly milestone birthday (just my opinion).

i never hiked the appalachian trail very far. but i love it. and it is my doctor and my retreat and my gift from him.one day i will hike all of maine and new hampshire and be very happy.
None. I've never even seen the Appalachians (except in pictures, of course). I've spent a lot of time in the Rockies, and I thought a thruhike would be the perfect way to get to know another one of America's great mountain ranges.

we have hiked about 1800 miles since 2003..most of this was in 2007...

I have about 120 miles on the AT. Md-Wv-Va. Mostly in Va. Not being in hiking shape and wearing really light weight tennis shoes, I know at least 1000 rocks in between those three states my toes don't want to meet again. Never been to Vermont or Maine. So there and Georgia. If those rocks could talk. (They'd be laughing at me.)

Made it from GA to Boonsboro, MD on my thru hike attempt this year, so around 1,030 miles. Ran out of money and had to go back to school unfortunately. Starting back on the trail mid-may at Harper's Ferry to finish the rest before having to go back to school in mid August. Can't wait to get back on and get the AT out of my system. Of course, then I'll just start thinking about other trails.....

connecticut section[51.5mi] up to upper goose pond in mass[42ish mi]...
cheshire ma to williamstown ma [16 mi]...
moosilaukee to rte 2 near gorahm nh[95 mi]
about 790 miles or so for me. lately most of my trips have been places other than the AT. not sure why just doin other things i suppose..

I've section hiked about 800 miles over 20 years, all of NY?NJ, most of PA. All of vermont and NH, and the mahooucs, I also day hiked Katahdin many years ago.
Wife and I have hiked from Springer to Erwin, Tn, this spring we hike from Erwin to Atkins,Va.

Hiked from Springer to Hot Springs as 3 different section hikes for a total about 270 miles. Also have hike a couple of other sections as well. All together, about 300 miles. The longer section hikes gave me a chance to do resupply plus get a feel for be out for more than a week. I think I'm ready for 2011.

I have thur hiked the AT 8 times. I plan on starting 2011 in feb or march I have also triple crowned.this will be my last thur hike !!!!!! time to move on in life...........:banana

Not much experience at all. Somewhere between 50-52 miles I think. Plan on another 40-50 backpacking miles before I start in March.

I've often stood in the middle of the trail where it passes Clingman's Dome and dreamed of walking it, but never walked more than a step or two. The last time I was standing there was October, finally in reach of our 2011 hike. I said standing there that I wanted every step of our walk to be a new one. Just under a month now until takeoff! :banana
