A nearly 10-year-old vision to turn a Superfund site into a nature center—thought to be a bit insane by more than just a few—was celebrated July 16 when officials of the nonprofit Lehigh Gap Nature Center (http://www.lgnc.org) opened the doors to its new green visitor and education building, proving to skeptics that even seemingly insurmountable obstacles can be overcome.

“We humans had done this Gap in,” said Malcolm Gross of the Harry Trexler Trust, the major donor on the project, referring to the denuded landscape that was left behind from industrial operations. “You have resurrected it.”

In 2002, the small nonprofit hatched a plan to establish a education presence in the Lehigh Gap and tie into the Delaware & Lehigh Heritage Corridor (http://www.delawareandlehigh.org/) that runs along the Lehigh River.

They've accomplished quite a bit! Now it's up to ATC and/or KTA to include their great new trails and access point on the official AT maps so the wider AT community knows it's there.
