A really nice trail, part of the Mont Mégantic Provincial park,

At the top, you will find the Astrolab. (Telescope) The day was cool and really foggy with drizzle. The good thing is that there were absolutely no flies/mosquitoes whatsoever. All that could be heard was the raindrops from the leaves. The great thing about being there very early on a Saturday morning is that there was no one but me on the trail.

Lessons learned for next climb:

Trekking poles: the greatest invention since sliced bread. Saved me from a fall about 5 times, and from a twisted ankle about twice. They take about 15 minutes to get used to, but will save much energy on the climb, and save your knees on the descent. For next time, I’ll try to make a better adjustment from the start, and learn how to adjust the wrist straps. With wet hands, the straps have to be well adjusted to avoid blisters.

Camelpak: the greatest invention since trekking poles. I will try to remove the air next time, the slooshing sound was annoying. Maybe I should try to mix with Gatorade.

Food: Peanut butter is great, but takes a while to process, and made me very thirsty. I will definitely need to be better prepared on the food side next time, and bring power bars and GORP. It is one thing to be in good shape, but you just need the fuel.

Boots: I will have to pay proper attention to lacing, as while descending I had my feet slide to the end of the boot, squeezing the toes constantly. It’s little things like that that can ruin your day.

Socks: I will try to get a pair that is all synthetic, without any wool. These ones were okay, but the wool made them somewhat itchy.

What is next: Mt Washington via Tuckerman ravine, followed by Katahdin (my first Appalachian Trail section hike)

I just learned that the park is actually connected to the AT via the "Sentiers frontaliers" http://www.sentiersfrontaliers.qc.ca/ and the COHOS trail http://www.cohostrail.org/ .

There has been some coverage of that trail in the local media here in Maine. It looks like a beautiful and rugged trail. Nice
