Have a guest today named Whippersnap who is taking a zero day to go hiking. He is a NOBO thruhiker who wants to hit all the high peaks he possibly can. So, today he climbed Equinox Mountain and Dorset Peak near Manchester, VT just to have fun and relax.

Tomorrow he is back on the AT and climbing the much easier Bromley, Styles and Peru Peak.

That's pretty wild, the blue summit trail up Equinox is a pretty good climb. Where did he start from in Dorset to hike the mountain?

Whippersnap climbed Equinox in just over one hour from the trailhead behind Burr and Burton Academy.

The Dorset Peak is just north of Danby Four Corners. We had GPS Waypoints to find that trailhead.

Whippersnap's real name is Peter J Barr from here in North Carolina. I have met him a few times and had the plaesure to hike with him once. He is the author of Hiking North Carolina's Lookout Towers, the director of North Carolina chapter of the Forest Fire Lookout Association and a member of the Carolina Mountain Club in Asheville, NC. Check out his website he created for people to follow his progress on the AT at http://peterontheat.com

What on earth is a zero day?

A day when zero miles are hiked by thru or long distance hikers. The day is usually spent in town resupplying, washing clothes, showering, eating restaurant meals, and resting.

As far a hiking on a zero day; I spent all day hiking around Gettysburg and I know plenty others have also done so.

A zero day is a day you make zero miles on your progress toward completing the trail. So that this guy does some peak bagging on his zero day still means he made no miles on the AT even though he made some miles on his feet.

When I did the AT back in 92, I made several stops along the way in New England to bag many of the NE 100 Highest to add to my already high list number. By the time I'd finished the AT hike, I'd gotten within 12 of the 100.
