I was stationed in Grand Forks, North Dakota with the Air Force, and my job required me to work outdoors at night. When the Northern Lights were dancing in the sky it made all the cold worth it.

Sometimes they can seen fairly far "south". I have seen them in Ohio twice. Very pretty.

I've actually seen the aurora borealis as far south as North Carolina (central). It was quite amazing and was reported in the local news. When I lived in Northern New York, I would see it several times a year.
Growing up in Minnesota I saw them every year. Still an awesome site when I see it
Only saw them once. It was at the '97 ALDHA Gathering in Hanover, NH.
Simply awesome.
